In this thesis I examined the pianist’s possibilities of taking rhythmical command in an ensemble situation.
The main purpose was to investigate how I could develop the ability to send different kinds of rhythmic signals. I also tried to adjust the rehearsals so that we would work on rhythmic interplay in the group.
In the project, I developed a specific method for practicing, as well as a plan for rehearsing. For the concert, I chose arrangements written by pianists I admire to use as a platform for practicing and rehearsing. To give concise examples of rhythmic interplay, I transcribed and analyzed specific parts from the concert.
Practicing did not give noticeable results. The actual progress was made when I got the chance to work with a group for a longer period of time. The rehearsals made me realize in what ways I can take rhythmical control over the ensemble. Analyzing the transcriptions from the concert showed how rhythmic signals had become a more natural part of my playing.
