The Imaginary Unit: A reflection on how to hold a moonbeam in your hand
Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Department of Jazz.
2021 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis [Artistic work]
Abstract [en]

In this thesis I will explore and explain the process of musical and artistic creation of the first 9 songs of my debut solo album. In this album I composed the music, wrote the lyrics, played piano/keyboards and for the first time in my life was a lead vocalist on a recording. The process was challenging on both a personal and musical level; I had to work a lot with my self-confidence and find the courage to show people the music I had been working on. I also had to work with finding the sound of my voice, using my limitations to my advantage, playing and singing at the same time, writing lyrics, composing and arranging the music, choosing which musicians I worked with and producing the album together with Albert Finnbogason. But mostly, and in a larger perspective, this project has been a about a search. A will to broaden my musical expression and identity and searching for how I can best do that. A will to engage in a new experience and to learn something new. How can I become a better and truer version of myself through my music? And lastly, how can I express all of this through the medium of artistic research? Appended to this thesis are the first 9 tracks from the album, and even though this paper attempts to use words to explicate the music I believe and hope that the deepest and most valuable information about the music, will always be in the music itself.
