This study researches the possibility to use neurofeedback for novices, intermediate and advanced music students in a classroom setting, to examine if neurofeedback can be applied in music education. The study is a case study based on seven subjects who participated for thirty days and did 5 up to 25 different sessions. The response was over all positive to neurofeedback and everyone wanted to continue. Four out of seven thought it helped them to improve in their music studies as well as performances. The potential use of neurofeedback as a pedagogical tool is concluded in this study to be promising though careful measurements need to be taken before the students start the training in order to ensure safe and good development and results. The study also includes the Gryzelier studies on neurofeedback and music students including the different benefits of SMR and Alpha /Theta training. In neurofeedback one uses EEG to measure brain waves. This means that sensors are put on top of the head to measure the brain activity. Brainwaves such as Gamma, Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta are measured and compared with a brain map to determine the feedback. The feedback depends on the result the subject desires. The development and history of neurofeedback started in the 1920s with Hans Berg who discovered EEG. Dr. Kamiya found 1958 that it was possible to control brainwaves through feedback. 1972 Barry Sterman discovered by chance what we now call neurofeedback when he researched cats sleep and made an experiment with cats and rocket fuel and realised cats who had trained with neurofeedback survived the rocket fuel. Joel Lubar (1995) developed neurofeedback to treat ADHD. 2003 was one of the first research projects on music students done by Gruzelier.
