Undersökningen syftade till att få inblick i hur musiklärare tolkar kursplanen för musik, vilka metoder de använder sig av och vilka ramfaktorer som påverkar instrumentalundervisningen. Genom tre semistrukturerade kvalitativa intervjuer har studien kunnat lyfta fram några faktorer som mest påverkar att lyckas i instrumentalundervisningen i grundskolans mellanstadium. Speciellt gruppstorleken har visat sig vara en faktor som i hög grad påverkar hur undervisningen utformas. En stor elevgrupp minskar musikundervisningens kvalitet och möjlighet till individuell kontakt med eleverna och därför är mindre undervisningsgrupper i grundskolans mellanstadium att föredra då det gäller instrumentalundervisningen. Tillgången till instrument och övningsrum är också viktiga komponenter för hur musikundervisningen kan genomföras. Det har även framkommit att strukturen på och innehållet i undervisningen i musik skapas fritt av läraren. I svenska skolan finns det ingen allmänt använd lärobok för musikämnets instrumentalundervisning varför det är läraren som själv väljer repertoar och metod enligt egna referensramar.

The aim of the study was to gain insight into the ways music teachers interpret the curriculum for musical education, which methods they employ, and the boundary conditions that influence the instrumental education. Through three semi structured qualitative interviews, this study has been able to identify the most important conditions that influence the possibilities of success in middle school instrumental education. Group size in particular was found to be a variable with profound effect on how the education is structured. Large student groups decrease the quality of the education and diminish the possibilities for individual contact with the students, and for this reason smaller groups are preferred in instrumental education. The availability of instruments and of practice rooms are also important determinants for how the education can be implemented. It was also found that the structure and content of the musical education is created independently by the teacher. Swedish schools do not have a universally used text book for instrumental education, rather the teacher herself chooses the repertoire and the teaching method according to her own frames of reference.
