Rebecca Clarke's Viola Sonata: Background, analysis and the self behind it all
Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Department of Classical Music.
2019 (English)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis [Artistic work]
Abstract [en]

In this study I have used Rebecca Clarke’s Viola Sonata as a starting point. I have made an analysis of the first movement to find out the structure and to be able to name the different parts of the movement. I wanted to know how the throughout studying of the piece and the composer affects the result and I was interested in how life was for a female composer in the beginning of the 20th century. I wasn’t familiar with Clarke before the study and when I found out that the Viola Sonata was one of the only larger works she ever wrote I wondered why? I’m writing about her self image and self image in general - what it is and how does it affect our behavior. Even today there are still some differences between how the male and female are being treated. The stereotypes are programmed deep into the society and that reflects also in the music world. After the research I did for this study I now have a clearer picture of both the piece and the composer and I think that helps me to translate the message to the audience.
