Utforskning av komposition: Att spela och komponera i en ovan genre

Abstract [en]

My project consists of composing music, rehearsing with my group and presenting my work by doing a concert. The group consisted of Jonny Ek on piano, Tomas Sjödell on bass, Sebastian Jonsson on alto saxophone, Erik Tengholm on the trumpet and I, Jonathan, on drums.

The idea behind the project was to write music that challenged me both as a composer as well as a drummer. I saw it as a chance to compose music that deviated from the traditional structures of jazz and forced the group to improvise over unusual forms and structures, which gave the group room to find new ways in the music.

As a composer and band leader I got more room to think about the shape and the curve of the compositions. My goal was to write music that was not supposed to be challenging in terms of technique or rhythm but instead had varied forms and unpredictable transitions as well as being fun to play.

In the process I have been strongly influenced by the American trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire. His intricate but yet inviting compositions, group sound and group dynamics have had a great influence on my composing and one of my goals I had was to, to some extent, mimic the music that he creates. Because I was so strongly influenced by Ambrose, it meant that I needed to dive into a type of music that I wasn't used to playing, a type of music that was based on straight instead of swung eighth notes and is built on different harmonics and linguistics than the older styles of jazz which is what I usually listens to.
