A comprehensive autoenthnographic case study, detailing the practice, engineeringscience and research used to create a stereo to 5.1-fold-out of the Canadianpiano and bass jazz duo recording, Look Ahead. This paper assertsthat a stereo to 5.1-fold-out, rather than fold-down is a preferable method becauseit affords each version a creatively distinct virtual acoustic environmentby unique preparation. Fold-out results in two separate and unique mastersthat share a strong common foundation of ensemble sound. The conclusionreveals universal insights gleaned from the practice and research, henceforthassisting creators to adapt a stereo sound-field into a multichannel immersivesound-scape.
