Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine how children explore musicality through their play.

Participant observation, audio and video recordings and children’s reflections through talking

and drawing were methods combined and used to collect empirical data. The observations

took place in the home of two children, who were five and six years old. The children came

up with songs while playing and explored musicality and creativity through improvised

singing. The results have been interpreted using concepts from Vygotsky's cultural-historical

perspective. The participating children made use of what they already knew and had

experienced before while making up their songs. At the same time they inspired and imitated

each other. The songs showed signs of the children’s knowledge and learning about structures,

intervals and rhythms while singing and playing. Their knowledge and learning was indicated

by how they explored musicality through imitation, interaction and inspiration. Play enabled

the children to explore voice, body and creativity by adopting different roles and perspectives.

They worked out frameworks while playing. The frameworks the children suggested inspired

them to come up with songs where they playfully challenged their tonality, vocal range and

storytelling abilities while singing. Singing and movement had a strong connection while

communicating and exploring musicality.
