Abstract [en]
This thesis is about my investigation of my trumpet playing when focusing solely on generating emotion. In the project background part, I’ve written about my studies of music up until I embarked on this project and why I found the topic so relevant. I have briefly described the purpose of the project, explaining how I wanted to explore the possibilities of focusing purely on playing with feeling and what sort of effects of the approach I hoped to find out about. As for the process, I have given an account of how I went about matters; how I prepared the musical material and what the various exercises were that I used, both alone and with my band. I’ve described the intention behind methods I adopted, such as improvising by singing, the use of lyrics of the songs I played, playing with my eyes open, collectively creating moods and limiting notes. In that section I’ve also touched upon certain discoveries I made and, in some cases, the challenges I came across. Afterwards, I have written more extensively about my reflections on my experiences, what I found particularly useful, what impact the various exercises and my approach in general had on my playing, the effect of musical settings on how I played as well as my view on the general challenges I faced and the importance of focusing on emotion when playing. I have wrapped things up, explaining how, given the encouraging results, I intend to explore the topic further.
