I, a jazz guitarist and plectrum player, have spent the last three years adopting a classical technique due to my frustration with the limitations of the plectrum. My work has been fourfold. Firstly, technique. I started off with no experience whatsoever in classical technique. I did however have great experience with the guitar. In this thesis I will account for my attempts at a fast and efficient way of learning something completely new. Secondly, “The Building Block Method”. In my compositional process it became apparent to me that I was lacking an intuitive way to think about larger chords. So, I devised a method that I believe could be used to categorise any combination of notes in a cognitively easy and intuitive manner. Thirdly, composition. I composed a piece for two guitars, both played by me, with the exclusive usage of said technique. I’ve taken artistic inspiration from minimalism and classical music, but of course, I remain a jazz musician. It is in jazz that I have the greatest experience and I believe my foundation in jazz has been like a prism for these influences to pass through, resulting in the music you will be able to hear. Fourthly, performance. Practise and reflection to bring the music up to a sounding standard I can be satisfied with.
