This paper is an investigation into the aspects of my personal interpretation of Divertimento for violin and piano by Igor Stravinsky, and how I have sought to deepen it. The purpose of the study is to illuminate my interpretation and practice process, and to investigate what extra dimensions reading the score and relevant background information, such as Stravinsky’s own words and H. C. Andersen’s The Ice Maiden, add to my interpretation. Through a three pillar research structure consisting of my own practice and lessons, reading of relevant background literature, and reading of the score for the orchestral version of the Divertimento, I have uncovered numerous aspects of the Divertimento for violin and piano that have not only resulted in a deeper understanding of the piece, but also a more solid interpretation with stronger characters and richer tone colours. As the piece is an arrangement and paraphrase of the orchestral ballet score it has been necessary to, at times, make more violinistic decisions – however, these have been made on a more enlightened background, which is why highlighting these, for the Divertimento, underlying factors have been incredibly giving and has given me a way of working on the interpretation of an arranged piece of music in the future. Furthermore, more research could be done on the differences that appear between the scores (that this study has had access to) by going to earlier versions of the Divertimento for orchestra, the ballet score and, if possible, the manuscript.
