Musikteori är något som kan verka som ett eget ämne framför att genomsyra musikundervisningen. Därför syftar föreliggande studie till att få kunskap om musiklärares syn på musikteorins roll i ensembleundervisningen inom skolformerna grundskola respektive kulturskola. Tidigare forskning visar att musikteori kan se ut på olika sätt beroende på instrument och genre men också att det är mer av ett eget ämne än något som genomsyrar praktisk musikundervisning. Studien utgår från diskursanalys för att förstå på vilka sätt musiklärarna talar om musikteori i ensembleundervisning. Fokusgruppsintervju var metoden för datainsamling där musiklärarna fick samtala kring studiens ämne. Resultatet visar tre diskurser om hur musikteori bidrar till elevernas musikaliska utveckling. Musikteori är också en ramfaktorfråga där brist på tid är en viktig orsak till att det inte hinns med så mycket av detta i undervisningen. Förhoppningsvis kan studien ge förståelse för musikteorins många sidor i undervisningen och förstå hur det kan verka på olika sätt beroende på skolform.

Music theory is something that can act as a separate subject rather than permeating music education. Therefore, the present study aims to gain knowledge about music teachers' views on the role of music theory in ensemble teaching within the school forms elementary school and municipal music school. Previous research shows that music theory can look different depending on the instrument and genre, but also that it is more of a subject of its own than something that permeates practical music teaching. The study is based on discourse analysis to understand the ways in which the music teachers talk about music theory in ensemble teaching. Focus group interview was the method of data collection where the music teachers got to talk about the topic of the study. The result shows three discourses on how music theory contributes to the students' musical development. Music theory is also a framework factor issue where lack of time is an important reason why there is not much time for this in teaching. Hopefully, the study can provide an understanding of the many ways of music theory teaching and understand how it can work in different ways depending on school forms.
