In this thesis, I will discuss the differences between being a bandleader and a soloist and the challenges of being both at the same time. I have also examined my own individual tone and expression and will be giving conclusions and examples of different combinations with the sound of both brass and woodwind instruments. The work is executed with my own Big Band and I will disclose how I have been arranging some of the songs that were performed at the concert in Kungasalen, KMH march 29. Similarities and differences between me and other arrangers will appear in examples from different eras of time and studies of their musical language. Sound and individual expression will be a central part of this work to optimize and improve the role of being a trombone soloist in a Big Band. I will summarize the situations when I subjectively perceive that my trombone-sound is the most empathic and right performed and try to explain why. The thesis also overhauls the role of being a bandleader and how to prepare yourself for repetitions and what to think of when managing a larger ensemble. This work could be directed to anyone that wants to form their own Big Band and have a desire to get a deeper insight into the role of the trombone soloist.
