Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study has been to contribute more knowledge into what high school students with the main instrument electric guitar express in their experiences and reflections about the musical element of improvisation analyzed from a social psychological perspective. In the study, a qualitative research method was used, consisting of an improvisation in the form of a jam as a trigger before the focus group interview and a semi-structured focus group interview with two participants who were in the third year of the aesthetic program with a majoring in music and had electric guitar as their main instrument. The results show that the participants expressed experiences of improvisation change depending on the context in which it is performed, that the participants experience improvisation as something personal and creative, that the participants experienced a greater expectation from their surroundings to be able to improvise because they are guitarists, and that the participants had difficulty defining what practice within improvisation entails.
