    Abstract [en]

This bachelor thesis explores crossover possibilities between jazz and middle eastern music by arranging folk songs and composing new music based on elements from both genres and performing it with jazz and folk musicians. The study includes a brief explanation of maqam and traditional music of the middle east, its development during the 20thcentury, the impact of western music, including jazz, and some examples of this impact in different countries in the region. It also describes my composing and arranging process leading to new compositions with mutual characters from jazz and folk music and rehearsing these compositions with a band of musicians from different backgrounds. This work subsequently resulted in a concert on March 11th where we performed five compositions, of which two were based on folksongs written for this project.

    Abstract [en]

In this essay I describe the similarities and differences between my main instrument, trombone, and my secondary instrument, baritone horn. The question I asked myself in the beginning wasdealing with what effects these instruments may or may not have onmyself in an improvisational context. In order to bring the project to a practical and musical setting aconcert was to be held. Because of this a lot of time was spent composing music with the two instruments in mind. Different ways of composing used aredescribed later in the essay. For example, only using pen and paper as well as the computer program Sibelius. The compositions were also divided between the two instruments. Some tunes were using trombone and others baritone horn. The reasoning behind this is also elaborated on. In order to make the comparison as fair as possible a lot of time was spent practicing thesecondary instrument. This was because of the needto eliminate the element offaultytechnique as much as possible. The last part of the essay reflectsupon different aspects that could have been improved.Such as planning the rehearsals, which got prioritized pretty late in the process and ended up leavingless combined rehearsaltimethan what was initiallyplanned. There isalsoa return to the question asked in the beginning.Explainingwhat differences and similarities wasfound. Also discussingthe effects that the different instruments had when playing themand why that may be. These effects revolved partly around sound quality but also how theimprovisational ways slightly changed between the instruments.

Exploring different approaches for vocal improvisation2023Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This work consists mostly of written analysis and results on how four freely chosen methods can help a jazz vocalist develop their improvisational skills. These methods are:

    - Written licks

    - Singing through chord notes

    - Experimental scatting syllables

    - Harmony-based improvisation and emotion cards (Kadri Voorand’s method)

Graduation concert connected to this work was performed on the 26th of March, 2023, in Tallinn, Estonia. This work also contains reflections and analysis on my graduation concert and a transcription of my interview with Kadri Voorand.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this project has been to compose and arrange music to be performed by an ensemble using electronic instruments such as synthesizers and samplers. The goal has been to try to create an electronic music ensemble that utilizes improvisation while staying true to the sound of modern electronic music in terms of rhythm, harmony and melody.

I have also been investigating how to incorporate the electric bass in this type of music, that most often uses synth bass. This could be done through the use of various effect pedals.

I have also done a comparison on how or if jazz improvisation differs from improvisation in electronic music. The type of electronic music that we aimed for sounded better with the use of a more minimalistic approach to improvisation.

    Abstract [en]

I wanted to challenge myself and write music for an unusual constellation of instruments. I wrote music that had inspiration from different genres like jazz, baroque, folk music and classical music. The instruments I wrote for were cello, recorder, harpsichord and double bass. The instrument basson participates in one of the pieces. In my work I will explore different forms when it comes to composition and ensemble play. I will investigate different approaches and methods with the ensemble. Methods that leave a lot of space for the musician's interpretation of the pieces. Together we shape the music into something that we think is interesting. During this project, I learned a lot about the instruments cello, recorder, harpsichord and double bass and how they work together. The project resulted in a concert at KMH.

Turning the Odds in My Favor: Exploring Non-Isochronous Meters Through Composition and Practice2021Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis discloses my exploration of non-isochronous meters through composition and practice.

During my two-year studies at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, I explored different unevenly divided time signatures by practicing them in various ways, producing transcriptions, compositions and arrangements. The main purpose of this project was to further my knowledge and skills within these time signatures and thereby expand my horizon on perceiving, conceptualizing, composing and playing them.

My endeavors culminated in seven original compositions, arranged for a jazz sextet, which I rehearsed and performed with an ensemble. During the process of composing, arranging, practicing and rehearsing, I gained a lot of articulated knowledge as well as embodied knowledge of the idiosyncrasies of various non-isochronous meters and different ways to perceive and play them.

    Abstract [en]

One thing that has inspired me about film music is that it has always managed to easily pull me into a different reality. In this essay I have gone deeper into different methods of convey- ing storytelling through music. I have composed nine songs to four different filmmakers materials. This was performed at KMH the 6th of April. I did some thorough research before composing, which affected my way of approaching the music. The methods I used was proven helpful for me, not only in a compositional stage, but useful also in my vocal interpretation, when conveying the material to a band and when thinking about how the concert was going to be executed. I will use these methods further in my work as a singer and composer.

    Abstract [en]

This study seeks to explore the opportunities and boundaries of creating music as a solo guitarist with different electronic tools. These tools refer to samples, loops, and effects. Furthermore, this study aims to discover the opportunities existing in Logic Pro X for creating more randomized music. To achieve this, I use different samplers and MIDI-plugins and explore the different ways to bring forward the improvisational element in these. I also investigate how, and if, the use of samples and loops have an influence on my improvisations and compositions. The result of this study is a self-composed suite, consisting of three parts. In these three parts, I use all the techniques and methods I assembled over the course of this study. The study concludes that the use of samples, loops and effects had a notably influence on my compositions and improvisations. My compositions took a more unconventional form of composing, the use of graphical charts, and my improvisations became somewhat notably influenced by the effects being used or the samples being played.

I also discovered different ways and techniques to modify, manipulate and randomize sounds using Logic Pro X.

    Abstract [en]

In this thesis, I have examined, analyzed and studied the interplay between the soloist and drummer in a jazz context. To understand it better I have chosen to study some of the masters in the history of jazz on this very subject. By analyzing legendary jazz drummers such as Elvin Jones, Tony Williams and Ari Hoenig, I have transcribed excerpts from recordings on which they are comping the soloist, and with that analyzed the topic of communication and interplay. Doing that I have gained a clearer picture of what these drummer’s concepts were, regarding the subject. With the conclusion that the vocabulary has moved further away from the idea of timekeeping. Instead, drummers developed the vocabulary to a more melodic and interactive way of playing.

It has also been important to choose the right music and musicians to explore different interaction techniques. Together we have questioned the drummer's role and his/her relationship to the role of accompaniment. Finally, I did a concert where these techniques were put to the test, to see if our learning method had evolved the way we interacted with each other.

In conclusion, what you can clearly see is that the concept of tension and release, dramatic dynamics and an open approach are consistently techniques of communication that all the drummers I have chosen to study have mastered. It is something rebellious and innovative that I have really taken a liking to, and look forward to explore further myself in the future.

This study could be interesting to the jazz musician wanting to learn more about the drummer’s role in a contemporary jazz context. Especially to the drummer wishing to develop their interplay.

Musikalisk Frihet2019Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (konstnärlig kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

In this project, Björn Atle Anfinsen has composed music for his group Anfinsen Atmosphere with focus on finding freedom in his musical expression. The music was played and recorded on his exam concert at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm in the beginning of march 2019.

In his compositions he combines different genres such as electronic, hard rock, folk-world and ambient music. The goal with combining genres is to create an image where different styles of music could be together. The music is written as a suite for the concert where all the songs are played directly after each other as one song, with no break in between. The idea of this is to do a concert similar to a theatre performance.

As a result of the project, Björn Atle states that he has found new ways of writing music where he can achive freedom in his musical expression. He also explores new sounds that he creates with the trumpet within the genres he combines.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis will discuss my work incorporating improvisation and musical freedom in music theatre.

The work concerns my written musical, which premiered in Kungasalen at KMH on 06/03/23 with my band and three actors. I will talk about my compositions and arrangements and how I’ve tried to add improvisational elements relevant to the story and characters. A big part of the rehearsal process has been letting the musicians take liberties with the written music and act on their impulses to avoid letting the music become stagnant.

    Abstract [en]

In this thesis I have explored ways to compose music with the movie 500 Days of Summer as inspiration. The purpose of the project has been to investigate different methods of being creative with a concept as a starting point and how to express emotions through music, and through this, develop my abilities to play bass, and to play bass and sing at the same time.To do this, I used the following questions: How do I create from a concept and what methods work best for me? What ways to express emotions and themes through music, based on an existing piece of work, works best for me? In what ways can I develop my abilities as a bass player in this process? In what ways can I develop my abilities to play bass and sing at the same time in this process? My methods have sourced from analyzing the movie in depth, documenting details, and using improvisation, amongst others. I have documented the writing process of the songs from idea to finished product, through stages of arranging and different ways of approaching song writing with the bass guitar and voice as my main instruments and tools. The project ended in a concept concert with seven songs all tied together with the story of the movie. It became distinct to me that my methods and making a clear plan at an early stage for the final concert helped me stay inspired and created flow and a coherent collection of music. The project has also pushed me to be creative with my instrument, developed my abilities as a bass player, singer and composer and have helped me find playfulness in making music.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

The essay is an analysis by William Benckert where he defines and discusses the musical tools of expression he used when performing and composing music for his exam concert. Most of the compositions were created with strong influences from the Swedish jazz pianist ”Esbjörn Svensson”, therefore many of the musical concepts and tools discussed are ones that William associates with Svensson’s music.

In the essay he compares what tools of expression he used for particular pieces and which tools he used across multiple pieces. The musical aspects he analyses are the music’s harmonic content, rhythmics, melodics, form and overall emotion. The question he tries to answer is ”Which central tools of musical expression were used for specific songs and which were used across multiple songs, and how were these tools actually put to use in context?”.

In the conclusion he discusses how he will bring these tools of expression into his artistic process in the future. He also discusses what lessons he learned from his analysis.

Sounds Within Sounds: Multiphonic possibilities of the saxophone in composition and improvisation2021Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is part of the result from an explorative venture into understanding how saxophone multiphonics can be used as tools for improvisation and composition. The focus lies partly on how I found these sounds, personalized them and incorporated them into my artistic language, but more importantly, this is an attempt of thinking through art by letting the experience gained from making creative use of accidental occurrences affect future experience in an open-ended artistic process. This is done in two acts, solo-playing and duo-playing. With the solo-playing I listen for what these sounds suggest in themselves, and through this, create open compositions that are embracing their elusive nature. The duo-playing searches for sounds within sounds in a sonic map, constructed from a co-creative artistic process that allows us to zoom in on details, experience deep and spectral listening through vertical musical motion. Apart from the written words and the compositions, the artistic results consist of several recordings, presented and discussed throughout the text together with connected concepts and contexts revolving around saxophone multiphonics, composition and improvisation.

KMH Stories: Berättelser om människan bakom musikern2018Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

During this project Malte has explored composition and musical leadership within an ensemble as well as his own role as a bass player. He aimed to investigate how the addition of vocals to the ensemble would impact his bass playing and compositions.

The compositions were based on his main musical influences and he collaborated with the vocalist Joanné Nugas during the composition process. The method of composing each song is described in the middle of the essay.

After being rehearsed the compositions were performed at a concert at Kungliga Musikhögskolan. The concert was recorded which, after listening to, Malte reflects about the concert in the end.

    Abstract [en]

During this project I have studied piano music by Franz Schubert (1797-1828) to thereafter use a couple of his harmonic structures as a foundation for composing music for piano trio. To write music that encourages improvisation and interaction between the band members has been a central focus while the broad goal of the project has been to develop myself as a musician and person. The project started in the fall of 2017, a senior recital was performed in Lilla Salen at KMH the 28th of February and was followed by time for reflection which can be found documented in my paper.

Something I wanted to try with this project was to create according to a partially predetermined method. I wanted Schubert’s music to have an impact on my compositions and from there I decided to transcribe harmonic structures on four of his works to rework these into new compositions. I hoped that this method would bring a forward motion to the work and in retrospect I believe it did. Composing with a few guidelines contributed with a sense of comfort to the process and made me stay on track through passages of low inspiration.

Reflecting on my work I feel that it became a good closure to my studies at KMH. A hybrid process showcasing different musical expressions, skills and sides to my personality with a work method that felt exciting.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis describes ways a guitarist can apply a saxophone-like phrasing in their playing and also discusses the various differences and similarities which can be found between the two instruments.

The foundation of the work was made through transcription to find the aspects of saxophone playing that may be possible to apply on guitar. I made conclusions based on the transcriptions of a wide variety of saxophone players. This thesis also contains exercises which are specifically crafted for working on applying saxophone phrasing for guitarists. In this thesis I arrived at the conclusion that it is very possible to integrate various aspects of saxophone phrasing onto the guitar although some are less problematic than others. For instance, there are resources that the saxophone has, of which the guitar as an instrument does not have. Despite this, drawing inspiration from saxophone phrasing as a guitarist can be considerably applicable.

    Abstract [en]

Acoustics, intonation and perception are fields that musicians deal with every day. Even so, they are rarely taught extensively in musical education. In my artistic project I investigated how new knowledge in these fields could work as a musical resource and inspire to new solo music for double bass.

My method has been to compose studies, to make use of this new knowledge in a musical setting. In the etudes I have isolated small areas such as; beating, multiphonics, overpressure, just intonation intervals, the pitch-rhythm continuum, difference tones and microtonal modulation.

This work has changed my view of the concept tone, interval and consonance/dissonance. Working this way has triggered a lot of inspiration and productivity for new unexpected music. This text could be useful for double bass or string players, composers for double bass, musicians that want inspiration in solo playing or incorporate Just Intonation in their musical language.

    Abstract [en]

This bachelor thesis declares my journey of writing music. The name and theme of the project is Maze, which is a description of me exploring my musical identity and personal development. Throughout this project I have processed all my thoughts through my cognitive behavioral therapy, to find a deeper meaning to my musicianship. I have also analyzed methods in lyric-writing and interviewed artists about their experiences. I have incorporated these learnings into my own music - to improve my craftsmanship in songwriting. The goal of this project is to be well-aware of my musical and personal patterns and to show my musical range in a concert that sums up my four years at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.

    Abstract [en]

In this thesis I will describe the process of working with a piano trio. The trio consisted of Jonny Ek on piano, Uno Dvärby on bass and, me, Jakob Bylund on drums. This process included choosing musicians, studying influences, rehearsing, and the selecting and arranging songs.

I will also reflect on my role as the drummer and band leader of the trio.

The main purpose was to investigate what happens to a trio that does not only rehearse often, but also puts in a lot of work in to studying their role models, such as Oscar Peterson trio and Ahmad Jamal trio, by listening and transcribing arrangements played by them.

By using these methods, the trio hoped to achieve a greater understanding of what these references were actually playing, and using that knowledge to develop its own interplay, dynamics and sound.

The impact of role models is analyzed by comparing the Oscar Peterson trio and Ahmad Jamal trio to each other, and to my own trio, finding the uniqueness of each group as well as the similarities between them.

During this project I have learned a lot as a drummer, arranger and band leader. Because of our many rehearsals and the way we studied our role models, I have gained a deeper understanding of my tendencies when drumming. I’ve also learned that the drummer in a piano trio could determine the direction of the music with very subtle but efficient ways, and therefore has a lot of power and responsibility to take care of the music.

As a result of using these methods the trio managed to get a deeper understanding of why its role models sounded like they did and use that information to develop in their footprints.

Where’s the Melody, Where’s the Harmony?2020Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (konstnärlig kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

This paper is about my process of composing and performing music inspired by The Great American Songbook. Doing this via tools acquired by analyzing the works from composers like Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Arthur Johnston and other composers from that era. I have analyzed and found common associations with form and harmony, the use of melodic content and often used clichés which I have incorporated in my own composing. It also deals with my progress to arrange and rehearse the music to present it in form of a concert at The Royal College of Music on the 6thof March 2020. I reflect about the process of composing and if I achieved the same level of freedom playing my compositions as I have playing jazz standards. I come to the conclusion that I feel as confident performing these tunes as I do music from The Great American Songbook.

    Abstract [en]

This bachelor thesis aims to give the reader an understanding of my musical journey during the years at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, as well as in my life before that. I describe my struggling with what genre I want to identify with as a composer and vocalist because of my love for pop music, coming from a heavily jazz influenced background (and studying at a Jazz Institution).

I describe the work I put in the five songs that is the result of this project and I present the people that have been involved (such as co-writers, mixing engineers, producers and band members).

I talk about my love for improvisation and jazz and how I feel that I can incorporate that into my more and more commercial sounding pop songs.

The last parts of the thesis will include reflections on my lyrics as well as all the different ways of composing music I have come to use and love.
