Vokal improvisation: En studie i att sjunga med och mot harmoniken2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this bachelor thesis, I explored vocal improvisation and the terms “out playing” and “in playing”. My ambition was to find new ways of exploring and developing my approach to improvisation, depending on the difficulty of the harmony. I presented a few methods that I have found useful in this process.     Focusing on the upcoming graduation concert, I wrote two new songs with my thesis in mind and then applied the improvisation methods. I also practiced using the methods while singing jazz standards and older original compositions.

In the last part of the essay, I reflected on if and how the different methods helped me in becoming more confident as an improviser. I came to the conclusion that I prefered singing “out” over simple chords than “in” over difficult ones but that I needed to work on both to achieve my improvisational goals. I also described why choosing musicians that made me feel safe was essential and how the graduation concert was affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

    Abstract [sv]

Dramaturgiska förlopp inom jazzmusik2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study set out to explore different ways to structure the dramaturgy within jazz music, using different levels of musical intensity over time. The author claims that there is a specific model, or method, which is used quite commonly in many types of jazz music, as well as in other genres. This model can be described as the level of intensity starting at a relatively low point, then increasing until it reaches a high point near the end of a certain timeframe, to finally round off with a quick downturn of the intensity level. For example, in jazz music this model could often be applied to a single solo, or an entire tune. The objective for this project was to see if it would be possible to find other such models for the dramaturgic structure, and to explore how these could possibly be applied.    The process of this study, was to first theorize a set of ideas for alternatives to the model described above. These ideas were then tested in a context, with the musicians from the author’s jazz quartet, which also was the band performing at the author’s graduation concert. After analyzing recordings of the ideas that were tested by the jazz quartet, the author extracted a few methods and principles out of them. He used what he came up with in this phase, as integral components when composing new musical material to perform with his quartet at the graduation concert.    There were some difficulties in drawing conclusions from the results of this study, due to its exploring nature and the vastness of the subject. Despite that, clear signs of potential regarding some of the alternative models for dramaturgic structure was shown. Arguments were made that the study produced some useful results within the scope of survey.

Gitarren, kronan på verket: Att från ett filmmusikaliskt perspektiv komponera för gitarr i en större ensemble2019Independent thesis Basic level (Higher Education Diploma (Fine Arts)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this project I have examined how I can use different ways to compose for a bigger ensemble and for my own instrument, guitar, as a part of it. As a musical form for the composing I chose to write music based on my musical preferences and influences from the film music genre. For the project I wrote five different pieces which I performed together with an ensemble which included seventeen other musicians in KMH:s concert hall “Kungasalen” on the 6th of mars 2019. The theses will give you a perspective on how I wrote the compositions and what tools I used, theoretically and emotionally. In this project I also go deeper into how I can evolve as a bandleader and how thorough I am with how I handle such a big ensemble, both socially and musically, and how I should manage in the future in similar situations to achieve the best possible result.

Internt och externt inflytande på en kompositionsprocess2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In my thesis, I have focused on composing by way of adapting motifs from solos I have transcribed, in order to find strong melodies and basslines. I had a hard time selecting the material I would make use of and struggled with balancing what I created myself and what I drew upon from outside sources. Hence the thesis' title, Internal and external influence on a composition process, where I use the terms “internal” and “external” to illustrate two sources I based my composing upon. At the beginning of the process, I was heavily emphasizing the use of external material, to detach myself from my habits and hopefully write innovative music. The result was a harmony rich with dissonance that conflicted with my personal taste. I realized that I needed to abandon this principle and find a balance where external material merely inspired me but was directed by my internal inclinations.

Utforskning av komposition: Att spela och komponera i en ovan genre2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

My project consists of composing music, rehearsing with my group and presenting my work by doing a concert. The group consisted of Jonny Ek on piano, Tomas Sjödell on bass, Sebastian Jonsson on alto saxophone, Erik Tengholm on the trumpet and I, Jonathan, on drums.

The idea behind the project was to write music that challenged me both as a composer as well as a drummer. I saw it as a chance to compose music that deviated from the traditional structures of jazz and forced the group to improvise over unusual forms and structures, which gave the group room to find new ways in the music.

As a composer and band leader I got more room to think about the shape and the curve of the compositions. My goal was to write music that was not supposed to be challenging in terms of technique or rhythm but instead had varied forms and unpredictable transitions as well as being fun to play.

In the process I have been strongly influenced by the American trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire. His intricate but yet inviting compositions, group sound and group dynamics have had a great influence on my composing and one of my goals I had was to, to some extent, mimic the music that he creates. Because I was so strongly influenced by Ambrose, it meant that I needed to dive into a type of music that I wasn't used to playing, a type of music that was based on straight instead of swung eighth notes and is built on different harmonics and linguistics than the older styles of jazz which is what I usually listens to.

Komponerande och framförande utifrån temat tillvaro2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay describes the process of composing music based on a predetermined theme to then perform it. The purpose was to find out how composing and to perform what has been composed, can be influenced by being bound to treat a particular topic. The goal was to answer the question of whether, and how, such a way of working favors or disfavors the process in general. The theme of this project was "everyday life" along with its different possible aspects or interpretations.

The compositions were composed mainly using creativity and imagination complemented by the computer-based recording program Logic Pro X. Both acoustic instruments and software instruments were used during recording and the recorded material acted as a basis for learning the music. The project was then presented to the public in the form of a concert given 8 March 2018 at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where the music composed during the project was performed by me on vocals together with a band consisting of drums, bass, guitar, keyboard and trumpet.

The project made it clear that treating a specific topic may be helpful in a lot of ways in various stages of an artistic project that includes composing and performance.

    Abstract [en]

This work is about writing music with others. The project discusses what pros and cons it might bring and how the personal experience of composing is affected. The writing was done both through physical meetings and collaborations remotely, with the goal of exploring differences between collaborating with others and writing music on my own.

The goal with the project was also to perform a concert with newly written material based on my own feelings and experiences. The concert took place at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm the 23rd of March.

The results of co-writing turned out mainly positive and I experienced it more productive, creative and seminal than to write completely on my own.

    Abstract [sv]

In the project Finding a way home, through storytelling, David Lindberg has investigated how storytelling can affect his musical expression. The question focused on a very concrete application of storytelling in improvisation but changed relatively quickly to focus on putting his musical and personal history into focus for the first time in his musical life.

Through this changed focus, he could combine this thesis with a first interrupted attempt to do the bachelor thesis at KMH seven years earlier. Lindberg refers to  lessons he learned outside the context of KMH in the years between his studies, and reflects on how his musicality has changed and developed through widely differing contexts in which he worked; from entertainment music to pop, rock and jazz, and how storytelling became an important component in defining his musical identity and the experience of having a musical home.

The thesis also comment topics such as self-esteem in relation to achievement, and how one’s own music can be overlooked in working with the ambition to please others in diverse contexts, both in education and working life.

Musical presentation took place through a concert in the Nathan Milstein Hall and is available to listen to here. The song material consisted solely of Lindberg’s own compositions, and the sheet music is included as an appendix.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study deals with the topic of drum sound in a studio environment and how I, as a drummer, can affect the sound. The purpose of the study is to understand and develop the various factors that together create a sound. The study involves technical areas such as timing and dynamics, material areas such as the choice of instruments and their design as well as the impact of microphone placement and the acoustics in a room.

After transcribing and analyzing the drumming of six famous songs, I recorded myself in a studio and by way of previous experiences and new ideas I tried to recreate the drumming and the drum sound of these songs as far as possible. Attached to this study there are transcripts of the drums and two versions on each take where one is without effects and the other is with effects. The process in the studio was documented in the form of notes and a video camera which then became the basis for my analysis together with the recorded material.

The result shows that accurate preparation and good knowledge of the instrument is a fundamental condition for a good sound. Choosing instruments with appropriate sound characteristics and taking time to tune and mic the drums makes the mixing phase shorter and easier. Because the perception of timing and dynamics is personal, the conditions for developing a unique sound are also created through the musician's way of interpreting and playing the music.

    Abstract [en]

As a bassist I have most often had a supporting role in the various musical ensembles that I’ve played with. For this project I wanted to play my own music and put together my own band.I wrote music for a jazz ensemble with two guitars, drums, bass and saxophone. I wanted to incorporate elements of rock and traditional folk styles in the music as well.

Throughout the paper I reflect on how the songs came into existence, how it felt to rehearse them with the band and ultimately how the final exam concert went.I reflect on the problems that arose and how I dealt with them. I make realizations about being a composer and a bandleader. I come closer to who I am as a musician and what it is that I want to do.

    Abstract [en]

In ”Gå på feeling – att ta det osäkra före det osäkra” guitar player Simon Löfstedt investigates intuitive musical composition with the guitar in focus. Löfstedt describes his previous compositions as detailed and complex. In this project het akes a step away from this, letting himself being ruled by intuition when composing music. He achieves this by using simple, short fragments of music, playing these with a selected group of musicians. A thorough description of the process describes choosing musicians, rehearsals and listening to recordings of these rehearsals. Here Simon outlines the fragments growth from embryos to full compositions during/post rehearsals and how the other musicians affect the final outcome. He also describes setbacks during the process in form of doubt and inner conflict. Simon describes himself being determined in finding a way of mixing different types of guitar techniques and genres while still maintaining a focused artistic approach. He also describes his musical background, which mainly derives from rock’n’roll, and how this has a major influence on the final outcome. Löfstedt’s focus on guitar sound is constantly present and he presents a thorough description of guitars, effects and amplifiers. Here he explains the choices that he makes when putting together his final setup, which is customized for the final musical result. In the final reflection Löfstedt describes his musical journey from past to present and the conclusions that he has made finishing this project.

    Abstract [en]

In this essay I tell my story on how I created my debut album ”Efterskalv” with my band Ingo. I describe the entire process, from the first song ideas to the released CD.

The group started as a school project, where I had a vision of creating a group that could play my music. I wanted a sound that could be described as Swedish popjazz, influenced by Swedish bands like Klabbes Bank and E.S.T. I wanted the group to be well-rehearsed and its members to be comfortable with each other to set a good foundation for working together, in order to lift the energy of the music to the next level. I wanted to write Swedish lyrics, as opposed to English lyrics, as I felt I could express myself better that way.

I present my band members, all of whom studied at KMH with me. I chose Tobias Johansson on the piano, Mauritz Agnas on double-bass, Tobhias Gräns on drums, Hampus Adami on the trombone and Jonathan Stribrny on the trumpet. The musicians started out not knowing each other very well but have over time grown into a tight group, all contributing to the music with their own style and thoughts.

I give an insight in my composing process. The first ideas to a song, being mostly melodic in the beginning of my songwriting days, have now become more rhythmic and harmonic. Sometimes starting only with a lyric and creating music from there. I give an idea of where the inspiration to the songs came from, and how I worked to get to a finished song with form and arrangements for the horn section.

I then tell a bit about the rehearsal process and how that affected the music, playing live and getting feedback from more experienced musicians and from the audience, and finally recording the album over two days. After that I give a description on how the mixing and the mastering process went as well as the work leading up to the release in terms of booking and marketing. I finish by reflecting on the result – how it turned out compared to my expectations and comparing how the songs sound on the recording to how they sound live. I give examples of what could have been done better, most of which would have been solved with more time and money. I conclude that the record is a reflection of myself, vibrant, filled with emotions and straight-forward.
