Etyder: Hur studier i Lennie Tristanos musik och metoder lett fram till ny musik2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

This master thesis discloses how studies in the music and methods associated with pianist, composer and educator Lennie Tristano (1919-1978) have led to the creation of new music.

Through transcription of some of Tristano’s most pivotal improvisations and compositions I have highlighted musical concepts e. g. melodic lines, vertical structures, superimposed harmony and meter that I have found idiosyncratic to him. Then I have alsoanalyzed Tristano’s approach to these concepts. Finally, to turn theory into practice I have composed études that treat the aforementioned concepts. Throughout the project, these études have evolved from exercise pieces to pieces of music, ready to be presented to an audience.

The work has broadened my musical vocabulary and has given me new tools for music creation. It also has made me question my habitual paths to expression and helped me to a greater trust in my musical intuition. This thesis could be of interest for musicians and composers interested in improvised melodic line, and/or the music of Lennie Tristano and his associates.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this project, Mattias Olofsson has composed and performed music for an ensemble of varying instruments, focusing on different musical roles for the guitar. The music was presented in a concert held at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. The purpose of the project was to experiment with, and discover new sounds, techniques and and roles for himself as a guitarist.

The process of choosing the form of ensemble, composing and the thoughts behind each composition is described. Problems that have appeared regarding different aspects of the rehearsals and the performance are discussed, as well as the insights these have helped produce. He also discusses problems regarding the guitar compared to other instruments.

In the end, Mattias states that he has realized what skills and and areas of his guitar playing he needs to work on in order to further develop his music. He also presents ideas on how to take the music from this particular project, and further refine the ideas in it, through a recording process.

I samspel med en pianist: Ett försök att kombinera två instruments styrkor2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This project is focusing on the interplay between guitar and piano with the goal of combining the strengths between both instruments. By experimenting with different compositional methods within strict frames combined with curiosity, the purpose is to explore new grounds. The goal is also to face the difficulties that may arise between both of the instruments. To achieve this, music has been written for a guitar and piano-duo, a trio with double bass and a quartet with drums.

The process of every composition, choice of musicians, choice of gear and the musical recital is explained in detail. The importance of having an open dialogue between the guitarist and pianist is described, as well as the rehearsal with the whole band.

In the end, a conclusion is made that despite the mentioned obstacles, the biggest difficulty was the composing. A conclusion that the project has given further knowledge of composing, as well as technical achievements as an electric and acoustic guitar player is also explained.

Min roll i en stor jazzensemble: pianist, kompositör och bandledare2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In my project I composed and arranged original music for a nine piece jazz ensemble consisting of five horn instruments and a rhythm section. My objective was to write diverse music specifically for the group I put together, and also to challenge myself as a bandleader. I had an ambition to write detailed horn arrangements and to take the opportunity to try out many different arranging concepts. Additionally I wanted to explore and reflect on how my piano playing functioned in the ensemble in different situations and contexts. A significant part of the project was learning about the relations between my roles as a composer/arranger, as a pianist and as a band leader. The result was recorded in the KMH studio.

When I contacted musicians for my group I wanted the players to be accomplished and professional but also with a strong personality that I liked. The horn instruments I decided on was one trumpet, two trombones and two saxophones, one of which also doubled on clarinet. This instrument combination gave very characteristic results I enjoyed. The musical ideas came from many different places but most of the actual composing and arranging work was done away from the instrument in the notation software Sibelius. Most of the arrangements was written in a more contrapuntal way than a traditional jazz arrangement, which was something I always had in mind. I also explored collective improvisation in several instances to make the music even more multi-layered in an interesting way.

I tried to find different roles for the piano in the different pieces to challenge myself as a pianist. Despite this I didn’t put enough thought into what my playing actually was going to be. During the recording I often found myself unsure of how the piano was going to fit in the arrangements. This was mainly due to the rehearsal time being too limited, but also because of my inexperience as a bandleader. The composer/arranger role and the band leader role turned out to take up much more of my focus than the pianist role during the whole process. That being said, I still learned a lot about my own piano playing in general. I also got a memorable recording of my music, and got some experience in leading a large ensemble.

Exploring musical space in the absence of a bass player2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The project Exploring Musical Space in the Absence of a Bass Player was my graduation project in the spring of 2018. The main goal of this project was to see in what ways the absence of a bass player affects the band members playing and musical communication, and if removing an instrument would allow the bandmembers to move away from the traditional roles we are used to in a jazz ensemble and enable them to explore the music in a new light. The band consisted of myself on piano, Karl-Henrik Ousbäck on drums and Sölvi Kolbeinsson on saxophone. The concert took place on March 20th in Nathan Milsteinsalen at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and together we played my compositions. Half of the compositions was specifically written for this occasion while the other half was material that already existed.

There are some challenges that come with removing an instrument from the band. When removing an instrument that usually has the role of providing both rhythmic and harmonic stability, all of the band members have to take more responsibility for both rhythm and time as well as the direction of the music. Sometimes the piano would” take on the role” of the bass player by playing bass notes in the lower register of the piano, sometimes the saxophone would do the same. The goal of the project was that all instruments could be both melodic, rhythmic and harmonic instruments and could go in and out of the bassplayer role as fitted the music best, or no one would take on that role. Removing a bass from the band did make it easier to play rubato in a way that is more associated with classical music from the romantic era, and it did bring out the melodies that each instrument created.

    Abstract [en]

In this essay Tomas Sjödell describes the process of composing and arranging music using different instruments such as upright bass, piano, guitar and computer. He looks into how the different instruments will effect the compositions and how it will affect him as a bassplayer.

He describes the process of choosing musicians, studying influences, composing the music using the different instruments, rehearsing with the ensemble and what he had to work on as a bassplayer to be able to play the music.

Tomas conclusion of the project is that the different instruments did affect the compositions in small ways but his on voice as a composer was always there. He also describes his development as a composer and bassplayer and how he will work with similiar projects in the future.

En minimalistisk resa: Med pianot, synten och datorn som verktyg2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis was to merge the different parts of my musicianship – the piano, the synthesizer and the computer – in a minimalistic, electronic genre based mainly on improvisation. The process consisted of experimenting with sound design on the instruments used, whether it was a piano, a computer, or a synthesizer. Therefore this thesis included some explorations of piano preparing, distortions, drones as well as effects, modular synthesis and recording. Through improvising on either a prepared piano or a synth the core of a song was created. It was then processed and refined through overdubs and editing. The goal was to make music that was slowly changing but always interesting, meditative but challenging.

The main reason this project came to be was the unmet need for a creative hiding space where no regards were put to other people’s musical opinions. Consequently this study had to be a solo project.

A main part of the thesis is the reflection on how the project progressed during the time it was executed. All insights made are described and reflected upon.
