Den moderna renässansmänniskan?: om kördirigentens olika roller2015Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Kersti Ståbi

Performing poems from the Poetic Edda

I am a folk singer and oral storyteller. In my Masters project I have made a series of concerts performing the poem Vǫluspá from the Poetic Edda in its original Old Norse.

Building on the musical elements in the Eddic poems, I’ve been searching the borderlands between speech and singing, using melodic material in the modern Swedish and Norwegian languages. As a method I have imitated singers in different living epic singing traditions from around the world, basing the creative process on mimicry and improvisation. This was a fast route to performances of great diversity: the Manas singer from Kyrgyzstan gradually enters a trancelike state, while Pansori from Korea made me think "unmelodic folk opera" and the Indian Pandvani is all-or-nothing storytelling with music serving as an engine. One specific perspective I have researched is the concept of a ”First Listener” - a representative of the audience on stage that can, but doesn’t necessarily have to, contribute musically. Traditionally the First Listener in Pandvani is very active; singing, shouting and challenging the teller, while the Pansori First Listener is a supporting commenting percussionist. As a storyteller and lead singer I found the presence of a First Listener highly fruitful in the process leading up to the performances. As a stage concept it offers forceful dynamics between the singer, the listeners and the poem.

The poems of the Poetic Edda were created and performed in an oral tradition, but survived to modern times only via written text. I regard myself a performer formed in a literate culture but in an oral music tradition. With that in mind I have explored performance of this epic material and its metres. Translation has become a keyword with many facets.

    Abstract [en]

The essay investigates how you deal with the score as a musician and the script as an actor to make the performance on stage a part of yourself, although somebody else is the creator of the piece. The aim is to look into the musicians and the actors work to find similarity, differences, contraposition and through that open up for wider thinking in interpretation. The essay is also searching for something that could be genaral strategies for everybody working with interpretation.Literature has been read and interviews with two musicians and two actors has been made. As the interpretation often is seen as a subjective process is there in this essay a will to let personalities speak through quotes from books, word-perfect quotation from the interviews and from the author of this essay.Thoughts on what you seek for in artistic expression and what this writing has given me concludes the work.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate how well adjusted the support is for young

people that have been diagnosed with ADHD, while attending the gymnasium. Analysis

and result are based on a sociocultural perspective and have their take-off in literaturestudies

and qualitative interviews with two students with the diagnosis and one special

needs teacher. The interviews were based on themes that had their starting point in school

policy documents and related literature. The interviews were semi-structured with the

aim of letting the interviewees speak as freely as possible. One of the themes included the

individual strategies developed by the interviewees, such as using mobile-apps to help

structure and plan for everyday life.

Results show that the available support is not well adapted and that how great impact the

ADHD-diagnosis has on how well the person do in school is greatly affected by in what

social context and what kind of support he or she has outside of school, for example by

family. The study shows that there is great need for further research and development

    within the research area.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine how children explore musicality through their play.

Participant observation, audio and video recordings and children’s reflections through talking

and drawing were methods combined and used to collect empirical data. The observations

took place in the home of two children, who were five and six years old. The children came

up with songs while playing and explored musicality and creativity through improvised

singing. The results have been interpreted using concepts from Vygotsky's cultural-historical

perspective. The participating children made use of what they already knew and had

experienced before while making up their songs. At the same time they inspired and imitated

each other. The songs showed signs of the children’s knowledge and learning about structures,

intervals and rhythms while singing and playing. Their knowledge and learning was indicated

by how they explored musicality through imitation, interaction and inspiration. Play enabled

the children to explore voice, body and creativity by adopting different roles and perspectives.

They worked out frameworks while playing. The frameworks the children suggested inspired

them to come up with songs where they playfully challenged their tonality, vocal range and

storytelling abilities while singing. Singing and movement had a strong connection while

    communicating and exploring musicality.

Ljusbrus - När tankar tar estetisk form: Om kreativitet, uttryck och skapande2019Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Vad betyder gruppen for individens prestation?

Chimär - Symphony No.1 in D major: orkestrering och arrangering av popmusik för symfoniorkester2018Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This project investigate what the outcome is when melodies from self-produced popular music are orchestrated and arranged for symphony orchestra in a form of rondo. In this case, after an older form of rondo consisting of four recurring themes as well as three episodes or deviations from said theme. This kind of rondo was made popular during the baroque and romantic epoch. The goal is to find out if, with limited previous knowledge in the field of classical art music, I can create a piece of music that reminds of an excerpt from a symphony from the 19th century romanticism where the said piece is based on melodies of the band Kainoabel. In order to achieve this, I have chosen to write after a form and an instrumentarium that is often represented in classical art music and that I take inspiration from parts of a symphony written by Johannes Brahms in 1883. Other pieces of music, selected in consultation with a supervisor, have acted as inspirational sources during the project. The result show that the newly written piece sounds more contemporary than desired due to the often ionic character of the tunes. In my opinion, the piece got a different character than desired but still possesses other qualities that can be described as more cinematic and sometimes juvenile.

Gruppstorlek i musikundervisning: Hur musiklärares didaktiska val påverkas av undervisning i hel- kontra halvklass2019Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

    Summary

The purpose of this study was to investigate, analyze and describe the experiences of electric guitar students playing in an ensemble setting in the upper secondary school arts program. In order to achieve this purpose I interviewed four electric guitar students to see how their experiences differed. The study is based on a hermeneutic perspective, in which a representative sample of both female and male electric guitar students where chosen in order to account for differences experienced across genders. The results show that all students are positive and want to take a guitar solo, but some informants feel that it is difficult to take the right amount of "musical space" in the ensemble. The extent of the challenge students are willing to take on and the degree of self-preparation perceived to be necessary before entering the ensemble sessions and taking a solo differs amongst informants. Important conclusions include that students like to play songs in which their instrument has an active and important role so that they feel they are making a meaningful contribution to the ensemble. Furthermore, all students believe that if they learn to find their way all over the neck they will be able to play a better solo. The girls in the study feel that they lack contemporary female role models that play guitar.

    Abstract [en]

In this study, the 21st century scientific literature addressing rhythmic music reading in children aged 5–8 is explored and compared. The described strategies are the main focus of the study but research on music reading´s effect on the development of reading and writing skills is also discussed. In order to meet the purpose of this study and answer the scientific question, the methods general literature study with systematic approach together with informal interviews with three neurology-scientists, are applied. Four scientific articles are included in the study. They were all thoroughly reviewed from a quality- and knowledge perspective. The scientific theory used for this study is Vygotskij´s cultural-historical psychology but my own background as a teacher of eurythmics, educated and experienced in Dalcroze´s methodology, is inevitably the light in which I view the results of this study. One of the study´s results, is that this subject did not yet render much attention from researchers during the 21st century, leaving a lot of room for further development of practice. The main results of the studied articles are that a) children tend to prioritize tone before rhythm when reading notated music, b) underlying beat on the shortest note-duration in the rhythm, rather than beat that corresponds to the “worth” of the bar, simplifies the development of music reading skills, c) accomplished music reading demands early developed strategies rather than practice and d) rhythmic music reading may develop in a trajectory similar to that of language and literacy acquisition and should be fostered within that perspective through all of the following: oral and aural exercises, writing and reading. The interview-section shows, amongst other things, that rhythmic training may promote the development of articulation and writing, but there are no direct transfer effects between reading and music reading.
