    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to gain insight into how experienced children’s choir conductors work

with the development of voices in the elementary school age. The work primarily focuses on

aspects of vocal production such as finding and matching pitch, intonation, tone quality,

resonance and falsetto singing. Because of the inherent complex nature of singing, the work

also to some extent covers other aspects of choir singing such as breath, posture and

organisation. Three experienced Swedish choir directors were interviewed with a qualitative

method. The results show that the directors’ methods were similar, emphasizing good voice

quality of the director, high registry singing, and enhancing listening skills over detailed work

with resonance and tone quality. The results also show that the choir directors were coherent

with and to some extent relied on the same method literature that forms the backbone of this

work. This study brings to light what methods are used by todays children’s choir directors

and further underscores the relevance of existing literature.

Är musikkultur något annat nu? Politikers och musiklärares agerande på fältet kommunal musik- och kulturskoleverksamhet2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The present work was an attempt to examine the impact of politicians ́ and music teachers ́ habitus respectively on their practice in the field of swedish community music- and cultural schools. The perspective was borrowed from the french sociologist Pierre Bourdieu whose terminology includes the concepts of field, habitus and cultural capital (resources). Though there are many agents in the field restrictions were made to the two mentioned above to be examined and interviewed. Likewise restrictions were made concerning the cathegories of capital (resources) that were investigated. Among these habitus/taste was chosen as the most interesting one since it deals with values. The issues called “actual questions” were the changing preferences with the pupils, the impact of media, the power of politicians, the turning of music schools into cultural schools, the cooperation with common schools and the possibilities for pupils with functional disorders. In addition value related issues were examined such as cultural wiews, democracy and the question wether music is regerded as a goal in itself or as a means for reaching other goals. Four politicians were interviewed and also a representative from the headmasters national organisation SMoK. Material from five previous interviews with music teachers made in an earlier work by the author was used. Conclusions were drawn and questions were raised related to twenty three subjects generated from three central questions for research. One major conclusion was that politicians tend to form progressive and demanding tasks for the music-/cultural schools according to the concept of Culture for all not knowing what the consequences may be for the music teachers pedagogic approach. Thus the politicians seem to regard the music teachers as a resource for something they are not a resource for today. This can partly be explained through differencies in habitus. Both politicians and music teachers would benefit from gaining more and deeper knowledge about the functions of music and for what goals on the individual- group- and society levels music can be used a tool or a veichle.

    Abstract [en]

This bachelor thesis declares my journey of writing music. The name and theme of the project is Maze, which is a description of me exploring my musical identity and personal development. Throughout this project I have processed all my thoughts through my cognitive behavioral therapy, to find a deeper meaning to my musicianship. I have also analyzed methods in lyric-writing and interviewed artists about their experiences. I have incorporated these learnings into my own music - to improve my craftsmanship in songwriting. The goal of this project is to be well-aware of my musical and personal patterns and to show my musical range in a concert that sums up my four years at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.

    Abstract [fi]

O cantor carioca: Vägen till det brasilianska sångsoundet2009Student paper other, 5 credits / 7,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This bachelor thesis aims to give the reader an understanding of my musical journey during the years at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, as well as in my life before that. I describe my struggling with what genre I want to identify with as a composer and vocalist because of my love for pop music, coming from a heavily jazz influenced background (and studying at a Jazz Institution).

I describe the work I put in the five songs that is the result of this project and I present the people that have been involved (such as co-writers, mixing engineers, producers and band members).

I talk about my love for improvisation and jazz and how I feel that I can incorporate that into my more and more commercial sounding pop songs.

The last parts of the thesis will include reflections on my lyrics as well as all the different ways of composing music I have come to use and love.

Scriabin's "Black Mass": The Ninth Piano Sonata of Alexander Scriabin2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to analyse Alexander Scriabin’s Sonata No.9 ”Black Mass” from a musical perspective. This work includes a biography of the composer that helps to discover his philosophical ideas and the background of his musical world. His mental state and the surroundings of the time were among the biggest influences on his music. There is no comparison to his imaginative world.

This work includes a chapter about Scriabin’s 10 Sonatas where I have reviewed the main characteristics of each of the sonatas. It also includes an overview of the particular 9th Sonata.

The analysis of this sonata is from a musical point of view. The analysis focuses on the tools Scriabin was using to evoke a mystical and demonic atmosphere of the piece.

I have analysed the importance of the musical motives – the way of building the form with the motives and transforming the initial ideas of the main themes.

I have also analysed the interpretations of three world famous interpreters of Scriabin’s music, as well as some significant background connected to Scriabin if applicable. All of the interpreters are extremely different in their manner of playing Scriabin’s music and I have tried to find out the ways in which they have become so different.

More and More of Less and Less: Ett poemusikaliskt utforskande i text ton och flöde2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This text is the written part of an artistic master’s project at KMH, Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Sweden. The purpose of this work is to explore perspectives and inputs to promote a composition process of text and tone in creative flow and to make them into some kind of method. The perspectives of reorientation, mimicry, play and risk, generated from Csikszentmihalyi's theories about conditions for the rise of flow state, as well as the improvisation theater's affirmative concept of Yes-and…, are applied to musical composition and artistic interpretation. Another objective of the project is to emphasize the role of the text in the pieces of music through compositional and interpretative methods, and to create conditions for musical improvisation that relate to the theme and drama of the texts reinforcing them. In reflections on the artistic results – the compositions and the performance of those in a concert - conclusions are drawn about how and when the flow state arises and decreases in composition processes, and about which tools can bring creative flow back after ceasing and about what is needed to avoid the risks of the absorbent flow state.

Vägen från barns unisona sång till flerstämmighet2012Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how to work with children to introduce polyphony. I have taken note of relevant literature and conducted interviews with three teachers with experience teaching both in regular school class and music class with admission test.I have examined how to proceed in the work of polyphony, what the importance of unison singing has for singing polyphony, and what determines whether teaching based learning by ear or by notes.By my thesis, I can draw several conclusions. The unison singing is considered a prerequisite for polyphony, but polyphony also seems to be a way to refine the unison singing. Some types of parts are common and it is important not to prematurely divide children into different parts to give voice training in different registers. In teaching choir in regular school class ear learning is the most common, whereas notes have a larger and more significant role in music class and choir with admission test, where higher demands can be made on the children.

    Abstract [sv]
