Stylistic Feature Mapping for Music Performance2021Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Stylistic Feature Mapping for Music Performance

In the late 1970s, the Royal College of Music in Stockholm (KMH) started professional performance programs for musicians outside the domain of Western Classical Music, including e.g. Jazz and Swedish Folk music. In the beginning, it was regarded an opportunity for informally trained musicians in these genres to receive proper music education.

However, it soon became clear that these students, in order to develop their artistic practice within their own genres within the domain of academic music performance training, needed terminology, concepts and methods for to describe the values, aesthetics, expressions, musical structures, instrumental techniques etc. of importance in their musical practice.

In the clash between musical styles developed outside of the music academies and the art music with its rich history of prescriptive descriptive concepts, there was a need for communication of expressional qualities between different musical styles – and this need for revealing the tacit knowledge of non- academic performers were in particular prominent in Folk Music. An artistic research project was initiated, conducted between 1983 and 1987 (Ahlbäck 1987), with the aim to study, document and describe performance style and techniques in Swedish fiddle music from a performance perspective, however making style comparisons possible.

One outcome of the project was a system for description and mapping of performance style qualities, and this ‘style mapping model’ originally developed for fiddle music emerged into a more general model for describing performance style qualities that has been used in artistic reflective training and in thesis work at KMH for more than 30 years, as a tool for developing, describing, documenting and communicating artistic directions and concepts.

This paper discusses the features of this model in relation to musicological and music psychological approaches to music expression and style and presents empirical results from the application of the system within performance training for over 30 years including over 250 students, as well as examples of influences on contemporary musical practice.

How has this approach been used for development of musical concepts in different artistic reflective works? What can be learned from applying this mapping system in the meeting between musicians with different musical values?

”We hear what we know” - On the power of concepts: how traditional fiddle music in contemporary society can benefit fromfolk music theory2021Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

”We hear what we know” - On the power of conceptsand how traditional fiddle music in contemporary society can benefit fromfolk music theorySwedish fiddle music, just as many other fiddle traditions, has a strong connection to dance. Making people want to move their feet is one of the chief tasks ofthe fiddler, and this connection still influences the music today, even thoughthe music might be played on concert stages or be digitally streamed. So what constitutes this knowledge of the fiddler? What is important when playing a certain local styleof Swedish polska so people actually can dance to it?    If you live in an isolated community with no contact with the outside world you might not have to reflect on what is the stylistic features of your tradition but today folk music generally lives in a multi-stylistic world where different value systemsthat originates from other music traditions than fiddle music dominates. Today’s fiddlers will have to relate to today’s world of music, whether we want it or not.In Sweden, since the 19th century, there has been a tradition of mystifying the knowledge of the fiddler, making the competence of playing a matter of socio-cultural background,  geography and ancestry. The perils of this view is that the qualities of  art of fiddling might be obscuredand  actually might be lost when music transforms - as music always do.In this talk Sven Ahlbäck, who is a traditional fiddler deeply rooted in traditional Swedish FolkMusic and very involved in development of new ensemble playing and teaching, will talkabout how conceptualising stylistic qualities of Swedish fiddle music such as e.g.asymmetrical beats, swing, bowing and intonation have influenced the developmentof today’s Swedish folk music, even beyond the fiddle.

What does AI learn from music?: on the problem of ground truth in music and the power of concepts2020Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Many AI applications on music relates to music theoretical models, in the sense of musical concepts and ideas of how music works, that are not always made explicit, explicitly discussed or questioned. Already the choice of representations of music and sound as well as the selection of data for training models can influence models and creative output greatly. Here we will give some examples of problems arising when modelling basic musical features, from the experience of developing  automatic music notation.

Att hitta sin röst i en synthesizer: En läroprocess i programmering av syntljud2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

When I studied to become a musician on my instruments violin and nyckelharpa at the Department of Folk Music at the Royal College of Music (KMH) in Stockholm. Musikhögskolan (KMH) in Stockholm, I wrote an artistic bachelor thesis in music. In the thesis, I made a style analysis between the Näck-tuned melodies of Tyska klockorna performed by Pelle Björnlert, Gustaf Wetter and Pär Näsbom. The analysis included a comparison between these fiddlers and musicians with history and notation. I studied their melodies, rhythms, harmonies, tempos, moods, stringing, phrasing, dynamics and sound. I also studied and compared their emotions/values, contextual associations, expression, musical structure, performance/technique and general conditions in three different stylistic mappings between these fiddlers and musicians. At the oral presentation, I performed these three melodies of the Tyska klockorna on my violin, playing as close to Björnlert, Wetter and Näsbom's playing styles as possible.

My twin sister Caroline Eriksson and I studied at KMH at the same time. When we started our degree projects, a graduation concert was included. We chose to have a joint “Sister Concert”, where two graduation concerts became one. The concert reflects the years before KMH, the years during KMH and the years after KMH. A varied concert with 24 fantastic fellow musicians and dancers, where we performed the music that is very close to us, both traditional and newly written, with a focus on interaction, play to dance and dance to play.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to elaborate and examine a method that I have chosen to call ”Ensembleportföljen”. The study aims to show whether or not high school students benefit from ”Ensembleportföljen” in ensemble lessons where they hopefully get a greater insight regarding their own musical development.

The study has been carried out in two high schools in southern Sweden. Two different classes were selected and the study took place during their music lessons where one class proceeded with their usual curriculum while the other one worked according to the ”Ensembleportföljen”. Observations of classroom performances and interviews with teachers and students have been carried out throughout the study.

The results show that a significant amount of the students that tried the ”Ensembleportföljen” did benefit from the outcome. A greater understanding regarding their own learning was achieved and their confidence was increased. However, the study showed that a functional digital platform is necessary for further usage of the ”Ensembleportföljen”. However, the study had to be done on the students' breaks not to take time away from the ensemble lesson.

    Abstract [en]

The writer of this master thesis was acquiring an education in classical percussion and deeply respecting the music genre named djent. He was so impressed by metal music that he taught himself how to use the notation programme Sibelius 7 and arranged a number of his favourite songs for the percussion ensemble so he would be able to play them. The following text supports and describes the process. A short analysis of 16 arrangements is included as well.

Personality in making music: How does your personality affect your practicing process and performing?2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Summary

Personality psychology is one of the most popular ranges of psychology today. There’re many different theories about how personality influences your thinking and behavior. The general thought among psychologists today is that personality is something that arises from within and stays somewhat similar throughout life – although some dimensions of personality can also change and develop. Genetics, environment and personal experiences each have an influence on your personality and its development. For musicians, personality affects for example what kind of colleague you are and how you like to work. It even has an impact on your stage charisma. Even so, perhaps one of the biggest things that tells about a musician’s personality is the reason why they’ve chosen music as a career. This reflection is about the different aspects of your personality and what kind of role they play in your practicing process, and in what way is your performance influenced by your personality, based on psychological research and my experiences with Sibelius Violin Concerto. Since personality also has a big impact on many other aspects in life, it’s definitely one aspect that shapes your performances and your career. Learning about your personality can help you to better understand yourself and your preferred working habits, and you can even learn to use this information for improving yourself as a colleague and a musician.

Att spela en improvisation: C. Tournemires improvisation över Victimae Paschali2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Piano and memory: Strategies to memorize piano music2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study was carried out in order to discover new strategies to memorize piano music. There are six different types of memory involved in performing: auditory, kinesthetic, visual, analytical, nominal and emotional. There are two main ways of practicing: playing practice and non-playing practice. I tried to find out if the order in which we use these two kinds of practice affects the quality of the memorization. During one week I practiced three different pieces following three different methods: 1 Using only playing practice; 2 using first playing practice and then non-playing practice; 3 using first non-playing practice and then playing practice. The second method had a much better result than the other two. The whole process was registered with a video camera and a logbook.

Musikundervisning och flow2021Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine music teachers perceptions of flow experiences in students. The study investigates flow characteristics in music education, the activities that preceded flow experiences and in what way teachers approach and plan for these activities. The study was carried out using semistructured interviews with seven music teachers who work in different school systems and student groups in Sweden. The interviews were analyzed using theories of both individual flow and group flow. The results show that flow experiences in students are characterized by deep concentration, unawareness of their surroundings and a disclination towards ending the activity. The activities were characterized by clearly defined goals and the opportunities for students to steer their own learning trajectories. Teachers accounted for utilizing an open and supportive approach towards these activities and their students. The activities were preceded by extensive planning and teachers also contributed with relevant contexts for students to engage in the activity. These contexts also showed importance in providing clear goals as well as relevance and authenticity for the activities.

    Abstract [sv]

Turning the Odds in My Favor: Exploring Non-Isochronous Meters Through Composition and Practice2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis discloses my exploration of non-isochronous meters through composition and practice.

During my two-year studies at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, I explored different unevenly divided time signatures by practicing them in various ways, producing transcriptions, compositions and arrangements. The main purpose of this project was to further my knowledge and skills within these time signatures and thereby expand my horizon on perceiving, conceptualizing, composing and playing them.

My endeavors culminated in seven original compositions, arranged for a jazz sextet, which I rehearsed and performed with an ensemble. During the process of composing, arranging, practicing and rehearsing, I gained a lot of articulated knowledge as well as embodied knowledge of the idiosyncrasies of various non-isochronous meters and different ways to perceive and play them.

    Abstract [en]

One thing that has inspired me about film music is that it has always managed to easily pull me into a different reality. In this essay I have gone deeper into different methods of convey- ing storytelling through music. I have composed nine songs to four different filmmakers materials. This was performed at KMH the 6th of April. I did some thorough research before composing, which affected my way of approaching the music. The methods I used was proven helpful for me, not only in a compositional stage, but useful also in my vocal interpretation, when conveying the material to a band and when thinking about how the concert was going to be executed. I will use these methods further in my work as a singer and composer.

Varför sjunker körer?: Intonationsfällor som uppstår vid användning av renintonation2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Den musikaliska upplevelsen i Dolby Atmos: En jämförelseundersökning mellan stereo och Dolby Atmos2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master of Fine Arts (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Hör man skillnad?: En jämförande analys mellan interna och externa plug-ins2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Examensarbete Saz: stilanalysarbete Mohamed Abdelkarim- Bizqens prins2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Tre musikterapeuters syn på resilitenta förhållningssätt i traumabehandling2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Music therapy in psychotrauma has been scantily explored in Sweden. The few results available suggest that music therapy in psychotrauma can be an effective treatment. The question of resilience and its importance in treating psychotrauma with music therapy has also been sparsely explored. The purpose of the present thesis is, therefore, to explore how three music therapists with experience in psychotrauma treatment look at resilient approaches in patient's treatments. The research questions are: How do music therapists understand the concept of resilience? In what ways do music therapists think they can contribute to resilient approaches? Which music therapeutic methods can contribute to the development of resilience? The study is based on three semi-structured interviews that were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The result is presented in the form of an overall theme: Resource-oriented music therapy contributes to resilience in the treatment of psychotrauma. The theme consists of three main categories, which in turn comprise a number of subcategories. Finally, the results are discussed with theoretical points of departure on resilience and music therapy in treatment in psychotrauma. An insight into the importance of the work to music therapy is provided, and ideas on future research work that can be further developed are presented.

Sången - musikproduktionens krona2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Genre och sångteknik2018Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Myter: Karol Szymanowski2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
