Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This thesis examines the relationship between suffering and creativity in the life and work of Ludwig van Beethoven during the period 1796–1803. Utilizing a variety of literary sources and resources, including biographies, musicological texts, medical analyses, and letters, the study explores Beethoven's personal and creative development during this tumultuous time. The focus is on Beethoven's well-being, life events, and compositions, with particular emphasis on the role of suffering in his creative process. By analyzing Beethoven's own thoughts and feelings, especially through his letters and personal notes, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of his music and personality. Based on insights into Beethoven's personal suffering and its relationship to his artistic creation process, the study discusses possible implications for contemporary creative processes and artistic expressions. The writer also discusses how the project process as a whole has affected his own artistic practice. Beethoven's gradual loss of hearing led to a profound personal crisis, culminating in the Heiligenstadt Testament of 1802, where he expressed his despair and isolation due to his deafness. The study demonstrates that this suffering and life crisis not only shaped Beethoven's musical style but also contributed to his personal development as an artist. His life and work offer inspiration and lessons even today, particularly in times of crisis and uncertainty. Beethoven's patience and struggle against life's challenges show that suffering can foster creativity and serve a higher purpose.

Research Question: What was the role of suffering in Beethoven's creative process – did his personal struggles around the turn of the 19th century affect his composing?
