Abstract [en]

Singing ideals are subject to ongoing transformation, particularly within the realm of contemporary commercial music over the past century, in tandem with advancements in technology. The manner in which music is created and experienced has evolved, opening new avenues for vocal expression while simultaneously establishing novel conditions for pedagogical approaches to singing. This investigation offers insights into how upper secondary school singing educators articulate the evolution of singing ideals over time. Anchored in discourse psychology, the study is based on qualitative semi-structured interviews conducted with six singing teachers affiliated with the aesthetic program at upper secondary institutions in Sweden. Through discourse analysis, the research elucidates teachers’ descriptions of vocal ideals and examines how these ideals are integrated into singing education. The results reveal several different discursive understandings; the discourse of vocal technique, the genre discourse, the discourse of expression, the discourse of vocal health and the discourse of the toolbox. The findings reveal how educators relate singing ideals to tradition, vocal technique, interpretation, and artistic identity within a dynamically shifting pedagogical landscape of music education.
