Den här uppsatsen handlar om processen att konstruera och framföra en liedkonsert med en berättelse. Arbetet syftar till att ta reda på om konsertens narrativ, det vill säga den ramberättelse som omger sångerna, påverkar repertoarval och den konstnärliga processen, och på vilket sätt ramberättelsen påverkar artistens interpretation.  

Uppsatsen handlar om liedkonserten ”Brev från min älskade”, som framfördes av två sångare och en pianist i Helsingfors och Stockholm under våren 2018. Konserten berättar om ett kärlekspar i krigstid och väver samman tolv stycken tyska lieder från 1800-talet. 

Slutresultatet visar att ramberättelsen kring konserten för sångarens interpretation mycket nära ett rollarbete: ramberättelsens karaktär ger sångaren en roll och sångerna tolkas genom den rollen. Ramberättelsen bildar även en dramatisk båge genom hela konserten och händelserna i berättelsen ger sångaren tydliga motiv som kan påverka interpretationen av sångerna. 

This essay examines the process of devising and performing a lied recital with a storyline. The aim of this work is to investigate whether the recital’s narrative, that is, the overarching story that frames the songs, influences the choice of repertoire and the artistic process, and in what way this story affects the artist’s interpretation.  

This essay focuses on the lieder concert ‘Letters from My Beloved’, which was performed by two singers and a pianist in Helsinki and Stockholm in the spring of 2018. The concert tells the story of a couple in love during wartime and weaves together twelve German lieder from the 19th century. 

The final findings show that the frame narrative surrounding the concert comes very close to a form of role-playing in the singer’s interpretation: the nature of the frame story gives the singer a role, and the songs are interpreted through that role. The frame story also forms a dramatic arc throughout the concert, and the events in the story provide the singer with clear impulses that can influence the interpretation of the songs.
