The shape of a solo: En fördjupande studie i formmässig utveckling inom jazzimprovisation

Abstract [en]

In this project, I explore how vocalists can use transcription of trumpet solos to develop their ability to construct and sustain solos over multiple choruses. The study is based on Martin Norgaard’s concept of  ”Sketch planning” which I use to investigate how a focus on overarching structures rather than just melodic details can facilitate the dramaturgical development of a solo. I have transcribed and analyzed two trumpet solos, one by Wynton Marsalis and one by Freddie Hubbard, identifying specific structural ”building blocks” such as rhythmic density, and motivic development. These elements were then used to create formal models, which I integrated into my practice routine. The text follows the process from the initial transcriptions to the practical application of the identified building blocks in a live ensemble setting. At the end, I reflect upon the results of these methods and discuss the challenges that arise when striving for long-form development. The paper concludes that while structural transcription is an effective tool for improving dramaturgical development, the obstacles to mastering a long solo are not only musical but also psychological, involving issues of self-confidence and the courage to utilize space and silence.
