2026 (Swedish)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master of Fine Arts (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis [Artistic work]Alternative title
Musical self extension - a study in unifying composition, improvisation and design (English)
Abstract [sv]

Musikhögskolan i Stockholm.

Abstract [en]

In this artistic independent master thesis, the author explores and identifies different

methods for a music producer to unify composition, improvisation and design within a solo

context for saxophone and an interactive electronic instrument design. Positioned within

the field of experimental music production and interactive instrument design the study

addresses a prevailing gap in contemporary electronic performance practice: the tension

between highly interactive, complex and conceptual technical systems and the preservation

of emotional, melodic communication.

Employing Research Through Design (RtD) as the primary methodology, the author

utilizes an iterative process to design, build and streamline digital software and hardware

tools. The purpose is to merge the interface between the performer, computer and hardware

devices, making the technology a natural part of the compositional material and a musical

self-extension of the performer. This process allows the author to touch upon the point of

intersection where technical design, composition and improvisation overlap.

The artistic result consists of a live video and multi-track recording of three original

compositions produced within this thesis performed in Eric Ericsonsalen at Kungl.

Musikhögskolan in Stockholm.

The discussion demonstrates that when a technological system is designed in symbiosis

with compositional intent, the boundaries between instrument, composition and

improvisation are partially dissolved. Additionally, the thesis underscores the necessity of

anchoring highly interactive and complex musical designs to a greater artistic and aesthetic

vision to prevent the designed musical instruments or tools from remaining purely as

conceptual designs.
