Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
The aim of this study is to explore the role and position of the piano as a therapeutic instrument in music therapy. The study adopts a qualitative approach and is based on semi-structured interviews with three practising music therapists. The results show that the role of the piano in music therapy is shaped through the interaction between the client, the music therapist, and the instrument. The music therapist facilitates participation by adapting piano playing to the client’s individual, motor, and cognitive abilities, as well as by providing musical and physical support. The piano can be used as a tool for communication and emotional expression when verbal communication is limited while also creating opportunities for connection and musical interaction. Furthermore, the results show that the physical and musical characteristics of the piano, such as the possibility of sitting side by side, its wide register, dynamics, timbre, and vibrations, can be significant for the therapeutic encounter and the client’s opportunities for expression. The piano can also be used to create musical structure through tempo, dynamics, and form. At the same time, the use of the piano is influenced by practical and contextual conditions, such as the instrument’s limited mobility and accessibility. Overall, the study shows that the significance of the piano should be understood in relation to the specific characteristics of the instrument, the music therapist’s way of using it, and the therapeutic context in which the music-making takes place.
