The culture and use of Estill Voice Training. : A qualitative study of how Estill Voice Training manifests during singing lessons (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This qualitative study has as its main purpose to gain an understanding of how Estill Voice Training (EVT) is expressed during individual singing lessons and group singing lessons. This study also intends to provide an insight into these singing teachers' own perceptions of how they experience themselves in teaching contexts where they use this singing method. To answer the two research questions, structured observations of singing lessons were conducted with these singing teachers and semi-structured interviews with them. EVT is seen in this study as a culture with the initiated singing teachers and the less initiated singing students who interact through mediating tools in the form of the singing method's concepts and methods for mediating singing technical knowledge. The collected data was then analyzed from a sociocultural perspective with a focus on cultural mediating tools in the form of linguistic terminology and methodology. It emerged that EVT can be used both explicitly and implicitly depending on the context, which has to do with whether it is individual singing lessons or group singing lessons, but also who these singing students were. In one-to-one lessons, EVT seemed to be used in a more explicit way, while in group lessons the singing method was used more implicitly, possibly with some simplification. The results from this study could generally be linked to previous research regarding aspects of singing students' independence, anatomical focus and musical mediating tools. This area of concern could be investigated on a deeper and broader level through more observations and interviews, or longer and more in-depth observations and interviews.
