This is a presentation of a website constructed in 1994 (updated in 2007). It was created from the singer’s perspective and is a free resource for singers and pedagogues seeking new repertoire based on old archival recordings. The idea was to create an easy hub for singers to find new songs and put the light on the singer´s perspective instead of the researchers.
The website is constructed so that the singer can use different ways of finding new songs based on different registers. The singer, dependent on what he/she wants to find, can start searching from the song, the singer, the type of song, the lyrics first line or the provenance of the singer. Once the singer has found a song to learn, there is a basic presentation of the song with a recording, a transcription, the lyrics, a short description of the singer and the song, the singing style, what type of song it is, the origin and archival notations. Each song usually has more than one recording: always an archival recording, sometimes a Midi recording, and/ or a modern recording.
The website also provides additional resources about song genres, singing styles, how to warm up the voice, and where to find more information about folk- and traditional singing.
In this presentation, the website will be introduced and explained, along with how it can be used more broadly for learning new songs, teaching methods for oral transmission, describing singing styles, etc.
