Den här studien syftar till att på ett normkritiskt sätt belysa könsskillnader vad gäller utrymme och porträttering i kurslitteratur i musikhistoria för ämneslärarprogrammet och utbildning i musikvetenskap. Detta kommer utföras genom att använda Theo van Leeuwens (2008) teori om sociala aktörer, som är baserad på kritisk diskursanalys. Studien visar att det finns skillnader i hur ofta män respektive kvinnor inkluderas i litteraturen, men även en liten skillnad i hur ofta de framställs som aktiva eller passiva. Dessutom finns indikationer på att kvinnor oftare än män nämns i samband med sitt kön, och att män beskrivs med ett mer hyllande språk än kvinnor. Vidare kan teorin om sociala aktörer kan vara ett verktyg för att få syn på hegemonier som kan diskuteras ur ett normkritiskt perspektiv. Fortsatta studier kan eventuellt baseras på intervjuer med författare till musikhistoriska böcker för att förstå hur de resonerar kring urval och framställning av musiker, samt inkludera ett transperspektiv.

This essay aims to, in a norm-critical way, highlight gender differences regarding space and portrayal within music history course literature for teacher- and musicology education. This is done through applying Theo van Leeuwen’s theory of social actors, which is based on critical discourse analysis (2008). The study finds that there are differences in the quantity in which men respectively women are included in the textbooks, as well as a small difference in the frequency in which they are portrayed as active or passive. Additionally, there are indications that women more often than men are mentioned in connection to their gender, and men are described with a more praising language than women. Furthermore, the theory of social actors can be useful in spotting hegemonies which can be discussed through a norm-critical perspective. Future studies can be conducted through interviews with authors of music history books to further understand how they discuss selection and portrayal of musicians, and as well include a trans perspective.
