Denna studie behandlar samtida metoder för undervisning av de närbesläktade traditionella arabiska och persiska ton- och musiksystemen, kända som maqam, med särskilt fokus på betydelsen av gehör och notation. Historiskt har undervisningen uteslutande skett genom gehör, under ledning av en mästare. Denna metod används fortfarande, men notation har fått en allt mer framträdande roll.

Syftet med denna studie är att öka kunskapen om betydelsen av gehör, notation och andra verktyg inom samtida instrumentalundervisning i maqam. Utifrån detta formulerades forskningsfrågor som undersöker hur instrumentalister med österländsk bakgrund resonerar kring betydelsen av dessa verktyg i undervisning av maqam, samt vilken roll den kulturella inramningen spelar för lärandet av maqam.

Dessa frågor undersöktes genom semistrukturerade intervjuer med fyra musikpedagoger som undervisar i österländsk instrumental musik: två från Iran, en från Syrien och en från Palestina. En tematisk analysmetod användes för att koda data. Den teoretiska ram som tillämpades är Hultbergs (2009) modell för musikaliskt lärande, med fokus på begreppen kulturell verktygslåda och musikkulturell inramning.

Resultatet visar att gehör fortfarande är det viktigaste kulturella verktyget för lärarna vid undervisning i maqam. Detta förklaras av dess förmåga att utveckla musikalitet, spelteknik och förståelse för maqamernas särdrag. Samtidigt har moderna verktyg, såsom notskrift och inspelningar, blivit viktiga i den samtida undervisningen av maqam, särskilt i en globaliserad kontext där samspel med andra musiktraditioner är vanligt. Notskriften har effektiviserat undervisningen i maqam och bidragit till utvecklingen av österländsk musik som helhet, medan inspelningar delvis kan ersätta mästarlärarens roll i gehörsundervisningen.

This study examines contemporary methods for teaching the closely related traditional Arab and Persian tonal and musical systems, known as maqam, with a particular focus on the importance of oral and ear-based teaching and notation. Historically, teaching has been carried out exclusively through oral and ear-based teaching, under the guidance of a master. This method is still in use today, but musical notation has also played an increasingly prominent role.

The aim of this study is to increase understanding of the importance of oral and ear-based teaching, notation, and other tools in contemporary instrumental teaching of maqam. Based on this aim, research questions were formulated to investigate how instrumentalists with Middle Eastern backgrounds perceive the significance of these tools in the teaching of maqam, and the role the cultural framework plays in the learning of maqam.

These questions were explored through semi-structured interviews with four music educators who teach Middle Eastern instrumental music: two from Iran, one from Syria, and one from Palestine. A thematic analysis method was used to code the data. The theoretical framework applied is Hultberg’s (2009) model of musical learning, with a focus on the concepts of cultural toolbox and music-cultural framing.

The results show that oral and ear-based teaching remains the most important cultural tool for teachers when teaching maqam. This is explained by its ability to develop musicality, technical skills, and understanding of the special characteristics of the maqams. At the same time, modern tools, such as notation and recordings, have become important in contemporary maqam teaching, particularly in a globalized context where interaction with other musical traditions is common. Notation has made the teaching of maqam more effective and contributed to the development of Middle Eastern music as a whole, while recordings can partially replace the role of the master in oral and ear-based teaching.
