Guidelines to find a viola bow: Comparison on bow history. Baroque, modern, and carbon fiber bow. Bow weight, material, applicabilities for bow strokes.

Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to identify the most suitable viola bow through a comparative analysis of various bow types, materials, technical nuances, and their corresponding sonic potentials. Specific research described in this paper is about the viola bow, so the argument is made that the exploration and knowledge of practice would be of benefit to any classically trained string instrument musician, specifically classical viola player. Conducted over a two-year period within a master’s program, the research involved practical experimentation and performance of standard viola repertoire using different bows. Detailed information of the bow's histories, classifications, and personal investigations are provided.
