Abstract [en]
In this artistic project, I explore how unconventional instrument combinations influence musical expression and improvisation in jazz music. Using music by Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane, and Joe Henderson as a starting point, I have created new arrangements for an ensemble featuring instruments such as tuba, french horn, and bass clarinet. Inspired by historical innovators like Max Roach and Gil Evans, I examine how instrumental roles can be redefined. The guitar takes on new functions, and the wind section assumes greater responsibility, even in improvised sections. This work is an artistic investigation into the balance between freedom and tradition within the language of jazz.
The result shows that the integration of unconventional instruments reshaped the ensemble’s interaction, encouraging new interpretative directions. The choice of these unconventional instruments required practical adjustments but also expanded the expressive range, challenging traditional roles within the group.
