Sjung genom trumpeten: En studie i trumpetens uttrycksmöjligheter med inspiration från vokalister
Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Department of Jazz.
2025 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis [Artistic work]
Abstract [en]

This thesis explores how trumpeters can enhance their musical expression by imitating thetechniques and phrasing of vocalists. Through transcriptions and analyses of prominent jazzsingers such as Betty Carter, Sarah Vaughan, Etta James, and Carmen McRae, the studyexamines the application of vocal techniques—such as vibrato, glissando, articulation, dynamic control, and register flexibility—to trumpet performance. The artistic processinvolved adapting these elements into my own playing, working towards a lyrical and vocallike trumpet style. The thesis also presents specific exercises designed to internalize thesevocal influences. The findings demonstrate that studying vocalists can significantly expand atrumpeter's expressive palette, offering new approaches to melodic interpretation andemotional delivery.
