Abstract [en]
This study examines the origins and development of jazz standards, with a focus on how original compositions from the Great American Songbook have changed over time. By drawing inspiration from the original arrangements, rather than later jazz interpretations, the project aims to breathe new life into older works and explore how these influence improvisation and performance. The study begins with a historical overview of composers such as George Gershwin and Victor Young, and discusses how the character of these songs is often lost through later adaptations. Through the analysis of original sheet music and early recordings, the study addresses questions about the composition's structure, arrangement, and how understanding the original material can enhance a jazz musician's expression and interpretation today.
