Time in the DAW : Incorporating a musician’s time as a music producer (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This work explores the possibilities of incorporating a musician's sense of time into electronic productions as a music producer. The term ‘time’ in this context is equated with ‘timing’, meaning “how one relates to the pulse.” By interviewing one musician from each instrument group in a standard rock/pop setting, as well as one producer, about their views on time, combined with individual research, an attempt is made to answer the question: How can I as a music producer integrate and preserve a musician's natural time when recording and producing in a DAW? The artistic component of the work consists of one period of music production before the research phase, and one period after, aiming to answer the question: How do my decisions regarding time in my productions change after a research period focused on time? The results show that after the research period it became easier to identify and correct timing issues in the productions, and presents various methods that were brought to light during said period. The discussion highlights thoughts and ideas that arose during the process, including the use of time variations as a tool for attention-guiding, and a questioning of the metronome's absolute position.
