This thesis documents Sågverksminnen (Memories from a sawmill), an artistic
project centred on exploring methods for artistically narrating stories about my
family history and the village of Båtskärsnäs during the industrial expansion of
early 20th-century northern Sweden. The project draws inspiration from “Dig
Where You Stand” by Sven Lindqvist and Matana Roberts' Coin Coin, utilizing
archival material to inform artistic works. Two audio-dramas were created: the
first emphasizing creative writing from archival sources, and the second
prioritizing sound-images for narration. Both pieces were performed live with me
exploring ways to perform audio-dramas using improvisation. The project
investigates how archival material can be used in a creative process and what
happens to the narrative when shifting from a more textual narrative to a more
sonic narrative. The research methodology is experiment-based, with a focus on
developing a conscious approach to narration, rather than solely on the final
artistic product. This exploration involved key narrative concepts and a shift
towards audio-drama as a medium. The project demonstrates the impact of
contextualization on artistic practice and the development of new artistic
approaches.
