Abstract [en]
This thesis explores the evolution of the viola as a solo instrument through a practical and historical study of a piece called Phantasy Op. 54 by York Bowen. The aim of the study was to research what are the technical challenges in playing a virtuosic work for the viola and how to overcome them with the help of a method called Daily Exercises. Phantasy op. 54 serves as a lens to the history of the viola. It was written specifically for the violist Lionel Tertis who was a pioneer of viola playing in the early 20th century. His playing and advocacy for the viola drew attention to the long-overlooked instrument and served as a catalyst for the composition of new works. To understand the time period and to form a historically informed interpretation, early 20th century performance practice of violin and viola playing was researched. Virtuosic works in classical music often face a prejudice of being shallow and flashy just for showmanship. The secondary aspect of the study was to critically evaluate if virtuosic challenges serve artistic expression. The results suggest that, in this case, virtuosity enhances the musical narrative and emotional depth of the piece.
