Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Department of Classical Music.
2025 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis [Artistic work]
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This artistic project investigates the possibilities of performing music on the bassoon using an alternative system of intonation in which the octave is divided into 31 equal parts – known as 31-EDO (31 Equal Divisions of the Octave). The work includes a brief historical and theoretical overview of various temperaments and their application throughout history. Through practical exercises, theoretical examples, and the creation of an original composition, the study demonstrates that the bassoon can effectively be used to perform music in 31-EDO. The project also highlights the significant technical challenges associated with performing in such a system, while at the same time emphasizing the creative potential and expressive opportunities that arise from experimenting with alternative intonation systems.

The piece Vid hamnen, composed during the project, was presented as a pre-recorded work at the graduation concert on May 22, 2025.
