The purpose of this study was to examine how singing can be advantageous to flute playing. Specifically in regards to the melodious aspects of flute playing, i.e. not finger speed or virtuosity. Based on interviews with two different flute players with different relationships to singing within flute playing two practise methods for flute where developed. These where then tested and the results analysed. The first method was flute vocalising/throat tuning, to sing simultaneously with the flute playing. The second was to practise singing solistically separately from the flute. Both methods showed great results, especially for aspects of flute playing like tone, airstream, legato playing, intonation, vibrato, phrasing and interpretation. The studie resulted in a performance of Schuberts Introduction and variations on “Trockne Blumen” for flute and piano, and a vocal performance of the song on which the piece is based.
