Abstract [en]

How can sound be described with the same clarity as colors, shapes, and emotions? This study explores the possibility of developing a shared language to describe short sound cues in digital user environments, called UX sounds. Drawing from practical experience at a professional sound design studio, a model based on archetypes such as caring, dynamic, and confident was developed to enable more structured communication about sound design. The model’s usability was tested through a survey where participants listened to self-produced short sounds without visual context and indicated the expressions they perceived. Results showed that some sounds were interpreted more consistently than others while subtle qualities like timbre, attack, and pitch had a greater impact on perception than expected. The study highlights how sound design can evolve into a more systematic and meaningful tool within both artistic and commercial contexts. It also emphasizes the important role of the music producer in creating sounds that not only function technically but also communicate feeling, function, and identity intuitively to the user.
