Abstract [en]
In this project, I have explored how Keith Jarrett´s jazz piano improvisation can inspire and develop drum solos. The project focuses on how I have embodied Keith Jarrett´s characteristic expressions and piano transcriptions to the drum set. I have based my work on the song “If I Where a Bell” with the Keith Jarrett Trio and transcribed two sections from his improvisation. Before transcribing, I conducted an analysis of the defining features of Jarrett’s improvisational style in this particular performance. These traits of character are the core for how I have portrayed his personal expression on the drum set. Questions addressed in the project include ”Are the characteristics embodied indirectly through an imitation of the piano performance on the drums, or is a reworking of the melody and orchestration required?” The project leads to a concert where the results of the study are presented. In conclusion, I discuss how this project has influenced me as a musician and what future investigations could explore, using this work as a starting point.
