Retuned is a work that aims at looking more closely at alternative tuning practices on the fiddle across Swedish and Norwegian folk music traditions. The goal is to research and reflect around the following two questions: what tunings can be found in these traditions and how have they been used? How can I use this technique as a source of inspiration for musical creation? The project explores the creative possibilities offered by scordatura by analyzing traditional material, drawing inspiration from its use in other genres (notably early and baroque music), and engaging in artistic experimentation to integrate the practice into my own playing. The work has been divided into two main sections, each focusing on answering one of the two research questions reported above: the first part is dedicated to a more investigative kind of research – going through various types of materials, such as archive recordings and transcriptions, tunebooks, papers and so on, in order to gain the best possible overview of the various fiddle tunings found in Swedish and Norwegian folk music – together with thoroughly analyzing different aspects of scordatura playing, such as looking at statistical data, considerations on tonality, intonation, and analyzing the use of a selection of tunings across different playing styles. The second part focuses on the artistic research conducted by the author on the experience of playing on different tunings – looking closer at how different mental approaches have personally evolved along the duration of the project, how different tunings evoke different moods and colours, and how scordatura playing could be integrated into the author’s active musical practice. This part also covers the process of designing a performance that gravitates around the use of several tunings. The results of this work can be summarized in: a detailed list of fiddle tunings across multiple playing traditions with information on their sources; a gained understanding of the interrelations between tuning, music and playing; a set of tools for playing and practicing in scordatura, together with a set of compositions; the development of a solo performance gravitating around different fiddle tunings.
