Abstract [en]

This thesis explores the interplay between music and sound design in video games, with the goal of understanding how their interaction shapes emotional engagement and enhances the overall audio experience. Driven by a desire to bridge my music production background with a career in the game industry, the project combines academic research with practical application to offer value both to myself and to potential industry collaborators.Central to the study is an audio re-design of a cutscene from Horizon Zero Dawn, used as a creative platform to investigate how different approaches to music and sound design influence the audio atmosphere. Insights were gathered through expert interviews with professionals from both the game and film industry, including composers, sound designers, and audio directors. Their feedback informed the creation of four distinct versions of the re-design, each reflecting an individual approach, and culminating in a final version that synthesizes selected perspectives.By combining these practical outcomes with qualitative data from interviews, the thesis aims to highlight the synergy between music and sound design. The findings offer a deeper understanding of the creative processes behind game audio and underline the importance of communication and collaboration within interdisciplinary audio teams.

I denna masteruppsats utforskas samspelet mellan musik och ljuddesign i videospel, med målet att förstå hur deras interaktion formar känslomässigt engagemang och förbättrar den övergripande ljudupplevelsen. Projektet drivs av en önskan att överbrygga min bakgrund inom musikproduktion med en karriär inom spelindustrin och kombinerar akademisk forskning med praktisk tillämpning för att erbjuda värde både för mig själv och för potentiella branschsamarbetspartners.Centralt i studien är en ljuddesign av en cutscene från Horizon Zero Dawn, som används som en kreativ plattform för att undersöka hur olika tillvägagångssätt för musik och ljuddesign påverkar ljudatmosfären. Insikter samlades in genom expertintervjuer med yrkesverksamma från både spel- och filmindustrin, inklusive kompositörer, ljuddesigners och ljudregissörer. Deras feedback låg till grund för skapandet av fyra olika versioner av omdesignen, som var och en speglar ett individuellt tillvägagångssätt och kulminerar i en slutlig version som syntetiserar utvalda perspektiv.Genom att kombinera dessa praktiska resultat med kvalitativa data från intervjuer syftar avhandlingen till att lyfta fram synergin mellan musik och ljuddesign. Resultaten ger en djupare förståelse för de kreativa processerna bakom spelljud och understryker vikten av kommunikation och samarbete inom tvärvetenskapliga ljudteam.
