Sångarens roll inom musikerhälsa: Diskursanalys ur ett genusperspektiv

2024 (Swedish)Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [sv]

Genom en kritisk diskursanalys, baserad på Carol Bacchis WPR-verktyg (What’s the Problem Represented to be?), analyseras tolv vetenskapliga artiklar inom ämnesområdet.

Abstract [en]

In the field of musicians’ health, instrumentalists have been preferentially represented, while the singer has become a secondary figure. The study aims to investigate whether the gender coding of the singer and the instrumentalist has contributed to positioning them differently within the musicians’ health discourse. A further aim is to examine the ways in which singers are represented in scientific texts about musician health and whether they are included in the concept of a “musician”. This is done with a particular focus on gender discourses. Through a critical discourse analysis, based on Carol Bacchi’s WPR tool (What’s the Problem Represented to be?), twelve scientific articles in the subject area are analyzed. The result shows that singers, a femininely coded role, are often marginalized, which contributes to a gender division between singing and instrumental playing. The study shows the need for increased gender awareness in research on musician health and in music pedagogical practice. It also shows that information about singers’ health, both physical and mental, is not sufficiently represented. By making the effects of these discourses visible, education and research can contribute to more inclusive and equal conditions for singers in the music field.
