Development of Improvisation Skills in Iranian Classical Music: From Tradition to Dialogue - A Practice-Based Study of Improvisation in Persian Music and Intercultural Collaboration

Abstract [en]

 My artistic research project investigates the development of improvisation skills within Iranian classical music. Despite improvisation being a highly valued skill in this tradition, renowned masters rarely provide formal instruction in it. Instead, aspiring musicians are often expected to learn through deep engagement with the Radif, the core repertoire, and through personal exploration. Recognizing this lack of structured pedagogical methods, my project aimed to explore and develop my own approaches to cultivating improvisation, integrating my knowledge of the Radif and Setar. 

Drawing on insights from discussions with my teachers, a foundational method involves understanding the structure of Persian music through the Radif, developing musical toolkits (patterns and methods for expansion), and applying the aesthetic principles of the tradition. My project applied these concepts through a method focused on developing musical materials directly through improvisation. This included extracting and applying toolkits from both classical and contemporary Persian pieces. A significant part of my exploration involved crosscultural improvisation with non-Iranian musicians, using themes from the Radif as a basis for collaborative musical dialogue. This endeavor, while challenging, highlighted improvisation's potential as a shared language across diverse musical traditions. The methods I developed provide a framework for continued practice and future exploration in traditional, freer, and intercultural improvisation.

1- Improvisation i Chahargah

Den här delen har sin rot i hjärtat av den klassiska persiska musiken och framförs inom Dastgah- och Radif-systemet. Det är ett tillfälle att knyta an till traditionen, där melodierna får växa fram i improvisationens naturliga flöde – precis som de har gjort i århundraden. 

2- Saaz va Avaaz 

Sam Nobakht – Mona Fallahamoli 

Ett musikaliskt samtal mellan setar och röst, där melodi och poesi flätas samman. Stycket följer den persiska traditionen av spontan berättelse genom musik, där uttrycket formas i stunden.

3- Yearning 

Amy Hakansson – Farshid Dalir – Mona Fallahamoli 

Här tar den persiska improvisationen ett steg in i nuet. Även om rötterna finns kvar i traditionen, utforskar detta stycke nya klanger, fraser och uttryck – och skapar ett fräscht och personligt förhållningssätt till improvisationens konst. 

4- Improvisation Ensemble i Mahour

En fortsättning på resan – där samma idé tar nya vägar, med andra dynamiker, möten och oväntade ögonblick.

Musik är ett universellt språk, och i detta stycke blir det en mötesplats för olika musikaliska världar. Musiker med olika bakgrunder möts, var och en med sin egen röst, samtidigt som de tillsammans utforskar persiska musikaliska teman som grund för improvisation.
