Our ongoing research project, "Searching for Sophia [Wisdom] in Music Production," aims to identify key factors that contribute to successful music production. We explore music production comprehensively through the lenses of music education, musicology, psychology, and sociology, striving for a deeper understanding of success in the music industry and among listeners. This study explores the role of micro-rhythm and micro-timing in digital music creation, particularly during the mixing process. In modern music production, the boundaries between pre-production, production, and post-production often overlap, with producers collaborating in teams. Within these teams, specific roles are assigned, including those specializing in mixing—a crucial process that blends recorded elements and balances sounds to create a cohesive soundscape. Mixing typically occurs in a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), utilizing tools to adjust volume, panning, dynamics, timbre, and more. However, one area that has received little research attention is how micro-timing can be used creatively in mixing. This technique adjusts the timing of audio tracks relative to each other, influencing the overall feel. Micro-timing manipulations are usually minimal, often occurring in microseconds, but can extend to 50 milliseconds or more. There are two primary reasons for employing micro-timing manipulation: first, it addresses phase coherence and the perceived direction of sounds when sound sources, such as a drum kit, are recorded with multiple microphones; second, it helps create a distinct musical groove. For instance, a short delay of 20 milliseconds or slightly more between an electric bass and drums can enhance the groove. Our research draws on the Haas effect, a concept introduced by Helmut Haas in 1949. This paper presents findings from our research on micro-rhythm and micro-timing in digital music creation, emphasizing how these manipulations enhance the groove and feel of a mix, as well as how listeners might perceive the music.
