Piano teaching in the Swedish primary school : A qualitative study of piano teaching from a teacher's perspective (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This qualitative study examines music teachers' working methods in piano teaching in the Swedish primary school from a sociocultural perspective (Vygotsky, 1978; Säljö, 2000). Data was collected through six semi-structured interviews with music teachers active in the Swedish primary school. The aim is to investigate how music teachers describe their piano teaching in elementary school by analysing statements that have been brought up in conducted interviews.  The study has focused on investigating the following aspects: teaching methods, motivation and feedback, tools and materials, and challenges and adaptations. Interviewed teachers highlighted ways to deal with challenges linked to, for example, heterogeneous knowledge levels, limited lesson time and lack of instruments. Some explicit solutions include differentiated teaching, digital tools and self-produced material. The teachers described that the students' motivation can be promoted through continuous feedback, student influence, joint music-making and the use of recordings. Overall, the study shows that teachers emphasize the importance of adapted teaching to the students' needs. In addition, teachers describe that contextual conditions are important for how this teaching can be carried out. Based on the teachers' descriptions, we can conclude that the teacher's role in piano teaching is complex and includes several different aspects that teachers need to keep in mind in order to implement inclusive teaching in primary school.
