The urgency of the Anthropocene demands new forms of inquiry that synthesize poetry and pragmatism, wonder and action, generosity and courage, speculation and facts. In this panel, we are thinking with and through the hyperlocality of multiple backyards, as sites where alternative modes of "scaling up" can be cultivated that resist monetized value systems and industrialized concepts of time. We think of this as “scaling laterally”, a branching that recognizes domestic, rural, everyday, and urban small spaces as multispecies zones of action. We will explore multiple backyards as localities that have urged and nurtured new modes of multispecies inquiries, which in turn have triggered lateral scaling and collaborative working beyond the backyard. How are artists, researchers, and activists moving beyond the modalities of critique to develop new generative approaches towards a praxis of care and attention? The theory and praxis that emerge from these backyard engagements might be understood in terms of caremaking which allows for other temporalities to unfold. The panelists Janna Holmstedt (Chair), Thomas Laurien and Carol Padberg will present their own projects and engage in discussion around community interventions that are localized and intimately tied to place in conversation with researcher Christina Fredengren
